Mammut Mount Trail XT 2009

£160.00

LFTO rating rating is 2
Owners' rating rating is 3.5

The Mammut (formerly Raichle) Mount Trail XT has been a frequent favourite of Trail’s when provided by the manufacturer as a 3-season boot, and it was ‘Best in Test’ in May 2009. However it has now been submitted by the manufacturer for inclusion in the 3-4 season category. The boot features a solidly built leather upper that is not one piece, but it has minimal stitching. There is a Gore-Tex waterproof inside too, to guarantee dry feet. To improve durability you get a rubber rand around the toe. When the boot is on the foot the boot feels great and gives a very comfortable ride. Underfoot there is a very aggressive sole unit that is ideal for getting a grip in mud and hacking across scree. The sole stiffness is ideal for backpacking, walking and scrambling below the snowline on rough mountain terrain. The price is stunning at just £10 up on that of spring 2009. So this is definitely great value compared to some other boots. But while the Mammut Mount Trail XT is ideal below the snowline and certainly best in its class, others are much better above the snow because this boot is not quite stiff enough for 3-4 season use when a little extra performance is needed on snow.

Upper full-grain leather; Gore-Tex waterproof lining
Sole Vibram Backpacking Rolling II advanced sole
Sizes 6-14 (men’s); 4-9 (women’s)
Crampon compatibility B1
Weight 1896 (size 11)
Made in Romania
Stores in the UK 95

Verdict
The Mammut Mount Trail XT is one of the best 3-season boots out there, but a stiffer boot will be better for use on snow.

I am a boot snob, however while shoping for some 4 season boots I happened to try these on. WOW, the most comfortable leather boot ever! I have used them last week in snow climbing helvellyn, used Grivel G10 crampons and they were fantastic, not a hotspot in sight. Would recommend to anyone who is not a serious winter climber! Also they look good, and not being a fan of brown boots, they are almost black. Got them very cheap £120, very happy!!

I bought a pair of these boots at the start of the year, as recommended by my local outdoor s shop so that I can attempt the Welsh 3000's in June. I have steadily attempted to try and break these boots in, and so far I can only manage 5 miles before they rip my heels to bits.Is this normal?? They are extremely stiff on the sole and when going uphill the lack of toe box bend (they have a rolling foot design) forces the back of the boot to shift down and rub the heel, no matter how tight you tie them up.I am concidering changing to another boot.
