The Brasher Kanaga GTX appeared in March 2010 and it is a great general winter walking boot. The upper is leather for durability with a rubber rand for extra protection. Inside the boot there is a Gore-Tex waterproof lining too. The Kanaga has a stiff upper and a supportive ankle cuff, which makes walking in snow and ice far more comfortable than stiffer boots, but there is enough support to make walking in snow easy on the foot. The toe box and sole are stiff enough for holding an edge on easier snowy terrain too and the boot will happily take a strap-on crampon. The outsole is a Vibram unit with a good set of lugs for walking above or below the snowline. This is a great general walking boot that can also tackle easier snowy terrain when hill-walking in the UK and you just need a little more stiffness in the sole than on a 3-season boot. But the Zamberlan Baltoro’s upper and sole flex are a little softer than some other boots here, so it is not going to be so good without crampons when traversing slopes for example as the sole will tend to roll off small edges. Some other boots have an even more aggressive outsole lug pattern for even better performance in the snow too. Other boots are generally better for climbing, scrambling and mountaineering.
