Asolo Flame 2010

£150.00

LFTO rating rating is 4

The Asolo Flame is a well-proven synthetic and suede leather boot with a Gore-Tex waterproof lining. What sets this apart from many similar-looking boots is that it combines fairly standard-looking styling with some really important functionality. So it is reasonably lightweight compared to some similar options. The upper is more supportive than most with a solid toe box that has a large protective cap, which is ideal for tackling rocky mountains. There is a good, stiff sole unit that is easily capable of taking the strain out of rocky mountain terrain, and the lug pattern has enough bite to keep the wearer moving over mud. There is good cushioning too. The result is that the Flame is a really hot pair of boots that have proven themselves to be able of transporting the wearer up rocky hills and down muddy dales year after year. But I’d prefer a slightly more aggressive outsole lug pattern, and some boots do offer a little more in this department. As with any fabric boot that is covered in panels and stitching I would expect simpler designs to last longer, although this is of course only an issue if you wear boots regularly on really hard terrain.

Upper 1.6-1.8mm leather, nylon, Gore-Tex waterproof lining
Sole Asolo Matrix
Sizes 6-13 (men’s); 3-9 (women’s)
Weight 1552g (pair, size 11)
Made in Romania
Stores in the UK 50

The Asolo Flame is an excellent, well-proven boot for general hill-walking, but some others have a more aggressive outsole for mud and boggy ground.

For me these boots do what they are supposed to, which is get me up large hills, without me having to think about my feet. I have quite wide feet, and these fit me well, and onece broken in were very comfy. -But these boots had the longest, most painful break-in period i have ever known. This was largly due to the heel and ankle area being very rigid, and causing a lot of friction due to lack of give. I've worn boots almost constantly since i was 15, and this pair nearly beat me! But once broken in, they are fine, anddo the job. There are no frills, and the boot seems to perform well, tho as with any goretex boot, i cant vouch for it being waterproof (mine leaked after 9 months). After 14 months some of the stitching has come undone, but hasn't worsened, and doesnt seem to be affecting the boot too much. I dont care for the styling (looks like a cheap trainer to me), and i think its a tad overpriced, but at the end of the day, i am happy with them. I bought them at £125 from Cotswold, and must admit at the present £140, i think i would look elsewhere 1st.

I paid £140 for a pair of Flames in Cotswold Outdoors. For that price I expected the boots to deliver, and they did. I went up Ben Nevis via CMD Arete in them, and then walked further 75km almost to the end of Great Glen Way. The boots protected the feet really well both in the mountains and over walking paths. However, they can be a bit rough on the feet as well, if you don't lace them appropriately. They certainly offer a lot of support in difficult terrain. I easily slipped on a wet submerged stone in the bed of a small stream, but I'm not sure how much more grip one has the right to expect in such case. Maybe if the sole was made from different kind of rubber it would have been better. However, the sole worked very well on even very pointed rocks. I hesitate to judge the build quality, because I didn't use the boots long enough.
