Alt-Berg Mallerstang II

£145.00

It’s hard to find anything made in the UK these days, but Alt-Berg has been making boots here since 1989. The 2.8mm one-piece leather upper of these 3-4 season boots is built to take the knocks, while a Sympatex waterproof lining ensures your stay feet. The high ankle cuff provides plenty of support and the extremely aggressive Vibram sole is ideal for rough scree as well as snow and crampon use on easier icy terrain. It’s exceptionally comfortable too and rolls nicely on every step. If you want to improve the fit then check out one of the five width fittings! But you don’t get the modern styling of some boots or perhaps the quality of finish of others, and you don’t get acres of padding either. But there is really little else to complain about here unless you just don’t want a boot with a waterproof lining. It really is hard to fault.

Upper: 2.8mm anfibio leather
Lining: Sympatex waterproof lining
Sole: Vibram Ice Trek dual density sole
Sizes:  7-14 (men’s); 6-8 (women’s) in 5 width fittings
Trail fit profile: forefoot medium; heel medium; volume medium; length medium
Crampon compatibility: B1
Weight: 2020g (pair, size 11)
Made in UK
Stores in UK: 28

Verdict: It’s ideal if you want a solid, year-round boot for UK walking, scrambling and backpacking with or without crampons

I'd not really heard of these until I went to buy some new mountaineering boots after discovering my Scarpa SLs just ripped my feet to pieces. I was determined to find some boots that really fitted - its something i often struggle with - I was suitably impressed by the range of fits available and even happier these were british made. I dont use them for summer walking as they are a bit too heavy and hot but for winter/cold weather I'm really happy with them - proabaly the best pair of boots I've ever owned!

Second pair of Alt-Berg boots ive owned, and are great. Can be a tad heavy/hot in full on summer conditions, but as we dont seem to get those, theres no need to worry. These boots will see me through my ML and beyond, in fact i dont contemplate buying another pair of boots for several years yet, although re-soling may be needed at some point in the future, but thats a simple trip to Alt Berg themselves, which is always a pleasure as no matter how busy they are, someone always finds time to come over and ask if they can help. i thouroughly reccomend getting a tin of their Leder Gris wax for use with the boots as its probably the best available and is very reasonably priced at only £2.50 for a large tin which will last you ages!
