The AKU Spider Light GTX features a unique upper design called AKU Air Infinity Technology, using materials more breathable and lighter than leather. To further enhance breathability, a thermoplastic PU frame provides support to the upper while leaving large areas of fabric open to the air. There is a Gore-Tex waterproof lining too, to keep your feet dry, plus a rubber rand at the toe and heel for extra durability. On the foot these boots feel great and benefit from a more rounded toe than some, which makes them comfortable for walking, although perhaps not quite as good for climbing because you cannot get such precise toe placement. Underfoot there is a Vibram Mulaz sole, which is more of a climbing-orientated design with a smooth ‘climbing zone’ under the toe. The combination of a lighter design and more breathability makes this very appealing, while the broad performance range is very good; but some boots have a more aggressive outsole and a full rubber rand for durability, which may be an advantage to walkers, while other boots here offer a more precise climbing performance. There is no women’s version of the AKU Spider Light GTX.
