Basic scrambling kit-list

Scrambling’s the grey area between walking and rock climbing. You don’t need specialist kit for the easier stuff, but if you really get into it, well chosen gear makes a real difference.

Narrow rucksack
Scrambles often involve a move squeezing up through a narrow chimney or between rocks: choose a ‘sack with no pockets to catch on rocks, which is narrow enough to never wedge you, and small and compressible enough not to alter your centre of gravity (and hence balance) too much.

Water-resistant top
Scrambling safety rules one and two: concentrate on where you’re going, and stay closely connected to the rock at all times. Bad idea number one: flailing about in the wind pulling on a waterproof. A comfy, well-articulated soft shell (or a waterproof like a Páramo) is the scrambler’s best friend.

Brainfood
Scrambling’s a workout for the brain as well as the brawn – that’s the joy of it. Keep yours sharp and observant by making sure your blood sugar’s up before you start and you’ll be a much better, safer scrambler.

Scrambling guidebook
Essential for planning your line of ascent as maps give no real clue. Small, pocket-sized examples are best, as the descriptions only really make sense when you’re there on the hill.

Stretchy trousers
Restrictive, non-stretchy trousers are a liability when you’re trying to hoick your leg up to the next ledge on a scramble. Stretchiness should be number one on your must-have list, while water resistance should be second (you may find it hard to stop to put waterproofs on halfway up a route).

Scrambling boots
Normal walking boots are fine for Grade 1 scrambles; but really get into it and you’ll find a narrower toe, stiffer sole and grippier, more extensive rubber will make your foot placements so much more secure and confident. Good examples include Scarpa’s Pro Ascent, Raichle’s All Degree Lite, and La Sportiva’s Trango S.

Don’t forget
When scrambling, wear the same core items used by a hill-walker, like walking socks and a base layer. Also, carry a map, compass, first aid kit and water.
