Trangia Trangia

£40.00

LFTO rating rating is 4

The Trangia is one of the most eternally popular camping stoves on the market, although it’s not to everyone’s taste. It is extremely simple, can’t go wrong and comes complete with a set of two pans, a frying pan that doubles as a lid, plus a perforated handle. It’s nearly impossible to knock over too. The built-in windshield makes it extremely efficient, and when burning meths it’s the cheapest on test to run. Indeed, this is the only stove to be enhanced by a stiff breeze. The good news for those who don’t like cooking on meths (ie slowly), is that this one comes with a gas attachment – you just click it into the burner hole to make a powerful gas stove. All of this for £40 makes it excellent value for money. But the problem with the Trangia is that it is both heavy and bulky, even though it includes your complete cook set. You also only get two heat options on meths – neither of which even begins to approach the heat provided by petrol or gas – and it takes a very long time to boil a pan of water, especially in winter.

Buy it if want a piece of outdoor history, don’t mind the weight and need an efficient all-in stove that can’t be knocked over. Better for two people than one.

Fuel types: meths, gas (with burner), or multifuel (with burner)

Dimensions: 18x18x10cm

Boil time: 11min 1sec (3min 23sec on gas)

Weight: 430g (without pans) +178g for the gas attachment

Pan support diameter: 18cm

Max burn time: 45min 51sec (100ml meths) / 1hr 43sec (gas)

Ok it's a little heavy & bulky for one person, and not the fastest - but who's in a rush on the top of a fell? (Put up your tent or blow up your air-bed). It's also silent which is good for people getting away from it all & don't want a stove which sounds like a jet fighter to spoil the peace. Good value for money too !

Well what can I say about this almost indestructible piece of kit. I've been using mine for over 15 years since I was about 10, it was simple enough for me to learn the art of using a stove and is 1 piece of kit thats never let me down over the years. The design is so simple there's nothing that can go wrong that a pin and a scourer cant make it as good as new. The base locks securely and provides a stable cooking platform. It's not the quickest, but it gets there in the end. The tortoise and the hare always springs to mind. I use them to teach DofE groups and they're safe and easy to use for novices, I certainly wouldn't like to give them my precarious titanium burner and pan set up which requires a delicate touch so as not to overbalance my gourmet meal. So much so that when out assessing, or leading DofE expeditions I still take my trust Trangia, as I know it will be standing when I get back. Value for money is another key point, a burner, a wind break, a set of pans/kettle all included. And if looked after will last a lifetime. No matter what I throw at it, a bit of attention with a scourer always sees it shining and performing like new. I'm sure most peoples bad experiences are from dirty and clogged burners. But I'd still bet that a jetboil, or even my trust Ti gas stove wouldn't stand the abuse a Trangia can take.

The only thing that can go wrong is you forget of lose a bit of it. That said you can replace everything. I've been using them for 30 years, the're so good my last two were stolen.

I love my Trangia! Ok, it's not the lightest or fastest stove on the market, but when you've got time on your side and your camp is all set up, it's great to fire the Trangia up and get a brew going - the kettle is essential! - the aluminium pans are a bit of a pain to get clean if you burn your food, and you do need to keep moving or stirring things around to prevent sticking, but there is a simplicity of use and an understated design to the stove that makes it a joy to use - I don't know if I should, but I also love the smell of the stove as it's burning away! Word of caution though - if the wind gets up, the flame can get pretty tall when you takes pans off, so as always, excercise great care when cooking in tent porches.

RE: Trangia Trangia

After camp is set up I totally enjoy sitting by my trangia and making cuppas and dinner for 2 all in one go easily. A quality piece of solid kit. Boils faster than review in my experience: with lid on and in light breeze...and good for simering too with simmer ring on.
