It is true that you get what you pay for, and although this is pricy for a remote canister camping stove, you soon work out why. It’s beautifully made and perfectly simple, plus it’s exceptionally light. It’s also a dream to use, offering excellent control over the flame level and a big, wide burner that spreads the heat evenly out on the bottom of even the biggest pans. When turned up full blast on a new canister it doesn’t flare, although in their enthusiasm the flames can overshoot the pan. Still, it brings half a litre of water to the boil in a good time and burns canisters efficiently enough. As for the structure, the pan supports are fantastically wide, and the stove is good and stable. You also get the superb MSR windshield and heat reflector , which add enormously to the overall efficiency (in fact, they’re invaluable), plus a small parts kit and a lifetime warranty. But it’s expensive for a remote canister stove and doesn’t have the best performance on test, though it’s still easily better than others of its type here (and that windshield means it will out-perform many others on the hill, even though this doesn’t show in our statistics). As a gas stove it will never be as powerful or versatile as one that runs on petrol, but then that’s gas stoves for you.

Verdict Buy it if you want the best remote canister stove on test and have the money to invest in it.

The MSR Whisperlite International is the best stove I ever owned. It's shear power output and ease of use became a standard for me to judge all other stoves by. I have never been a fan of gas stoves, lack of pressure as fuel is being used up, under powered, useless in windy conditions etc. Over years technology improvements have been made, but not enough to sway my mind until now ... Come along the Windpro. For the first time I have a gas stove which could contest the Whisperlite: - Field maintainable in MSR tradition, - It boils 2lt of water at 2000m in no time. - Effective windshield - Stable with big MSR pots - Easy to cook for a party of 5 with one stove. It beats the Whisperlite in two points: - It is quicker to lite (duh!) - It can simmer Being a remote mount, when the pressure in the canister drops, it is a simple job of turning the latter upside down and pressure is restored. Conclusion: Finally a gas stove that I would consider for winter usage.

Re: MSR Windpro

Always use this in base camp situations, the MSR stove base to stabilize it is pricy but a good addition for long term use at the camp. The supplied windshield is pretty useless in my opinion, I use a folding all shield instead. Nice and easy to use compared to liquid fuel stoves, so its one less thing to think about.

Re: MSR Windpro

Fantastic Service from First Ascent - the MSR distributor in the Uk.  I sent the stove to them and they are sending it to the USA to be tested. They have replaced the stove without quibble or question.  Thanks to Lindsay at First Ascent!

MSR Windpro

I've owned one now for about a 12 month.  I was loving it, finding it as stated above, light, easy to use and powerful.  However, in recent weeks the flame has become less powerful to the point where it was useless.  This was even with a new can.  I've stripped it down and cleaned out the fuel pipe which was blocked.  Its now working satisfactorily again.  A friend of mine had exactly the same issue with his.  Nowhere on the MSR site does it say that this will be necessary, so I'm wondering what is wrong!

I've got my eye on a second stove now (gear freak that I am) and am trying to decide between the Reactor or the Whisperlite... hmmm
