MSR Pocket Rocket

£30.00

LFTO rating rating is 5
Owners' rating rating is 4.5

The Pocket Rocket is ridiculously small and impossibly light, making it an extremely attractive camping stove for anyone who likes to travel with a minimal pack. It is very similar in this respect to some other stoves, but it beats these mainly because of the excellent price. Performance wise it is excellent, bringing a pan to the boil in just over three minutes, and you can eke out just shy of 2 hours’ cooking from a canister. Combine all this with the pure simplicity of design, a good, compact case, wide pan supports for the class, great flame control and the quality workmanship we expect from MSR, and you have an excellent, minimalist stove. But this, being a screw-on stove, suffers from three main setbacks: it has poor stability because of its height, it are harder to arrange a windshield around, and when the canister begins to wane, you can’t tip it upside down or shake it for increased performance. These problems, however, are common to all screw-top designs.

Verdict Buy it if you want an extremely small, lightweight stove with plenty of power, and you are not put off by the constraints of screw-top stoves. It’s also extremely good value.

This is a great stove. Packs small, weighs pretty much nothing and is very reliable. Almost forgot, performance is great also.

My Pocket rocket is one of my most valuable bits of kit! It cooks my food! Attach this nozzle to a 4 or 8oz gas canister and you’re away. It boils water within 3 minutes or so and has a maximum burn time of 2 hours. If you’re lucky you can pick one up for less than £30. I’ll usually pack 2 4oz canisters with me if i'm trekking over a week but one if I’m sparing, using enough gas to make breakfast, dinner and a brew, it’ll last! Always pack another canister replacement just in case but the 3 items won’t take up too much space in your pack. I’ve got 2 Pocket Rockets and I’ve had them for about a year with no problems. They’re neat, small and weigh practically nothing (94g). The only problem is when the wind picks up but just move yourself to a more protected area and your flame hopefully won’t go out!! Just make sure your pots and pans are small too and don’t forget to always pack a box of waterproof matches and a firelighter! Dan http://intotheoutside.blogspot.com

Ye old Pocket Rocket is superbly small and light, so ideal for backpacking. It cooks quickly and you can enjoy a fine four course meal snuggled down in your tent at the end of a good day. It's simple to use, basic design and done to perfection. Also very easy to smuggle onto the plane mixed in with your climbing hardware on your way to Norway, which is more than can be said for my compatriot's larger stoves which were all confiscated. I don't condone it of course. MSr know how to build a good cooker and this is a fine example. Yes it has the usual screw-top design issues, but hey no-one's perfect.

well what can you say about the msr pocket rocket apart from it says exactly what it does on the lid. my personal choice of stove with a 100 gas cart titan kettle and cup. i also carry a home made meths stove ... if ever my msr does a nasty on me ... no problem @ all, keep it clean , check 'o' ring every time before u put in cart 4 grit etc ... worth the money (can not believe i said that) but it is a class stove !

fire it up and you'd think a tornado fighter has just entered yout tent, bothy or campsite, The only niggle with it, is getting it balanced, but apart from that once set tight it dont hang about getting your water or food hot. It boils water in under 3 minutes pack down very small and weighs next to nothing. If you want a small powerful gas stove then this is the one for you.

What an excellent all rounder! I've used mine for 5 years in all weathers to make a brew and to cook. Absolutely faultless performance owith any gas cylinder that will fit. The average boil times always seemed very quick and cooking conrol is easy. It does what it says on the tin better than most other gas stoves I've used and is so small and easy to carry. I love it and would recommend it to anyone.

I needed a light, easy to use stove for my upcoming forays into wildcamping. I picked this up from Decathlon for £19, and have been chuffed with it. Does exactly what it says on the box and is well made. This, matches and a coleman 100 gas canister sit nicely in my Primus trekking kettle. Recommended.

Ive had this gas stove since they came out, As an outdoor instructor i have used it on survival courses as spare(to the camp fire) also big wall climbing, winter climbing/camping. Although unstable on most ground, there is alot you can do to prevent a spilling the contents of a pot, the jetboil system has come up with a gas canister stand which i personnally use and is light and compact. The burn time is great with even the smallest of canisters lasting a hole weekend and the boil time is even better as i use the titan kettle it boils a full kettle in about 2mins 30secs. Brewing up to boil in the bags this stove does it all in the quickest time with the added bous that it weighs next to nothing. GREAT!!!!!!

I have used one of these for about four years for wild camping trips, cooking all meals on it. All stoves of this type are a bit unstable, one way to sort this is to cut out a piece of turf the size of the gas canister and firmly wedge the canister and stove into the hole. The only stove that’s lighter is made by Coleman and is flimsy in comparison (I had to reassemble one for someone on a wild camp). The Pocket Rocket is solidly made despite its low weight. An aptly named design classic.

I snapped one up mail order from Field & trek around about a year ago. It was on special for about £21. It boiled a small kettle in under 2 minutes the first time I used it and it's perfect for making tea when the thought of a flask of coffee just doesn't appeal. And it's so small that it really isn't any bother to carry in a pocket let alone a back pack.

RE: MSR Pocket Rocket

I find that because of the small burner it tends to cook more centrally leaving the outer parts of the pan & contents undercooked (no matter how low the heat is)

Will it stand the tests of time??

I have one of these as my stand-by stove on extended trips and use it as my main stove on shorter routes, I bought it late summer this year.
I must admit, I am biased towards multi fuel stoves for many reasons but if it's light and quick you are after, then this is the stove. I definately would not use it inside my porch tho and as said previously on here, it's balance is more than just a bit of an issue.
One of my stoves I have, was bought in 95, it was a Coleman Peak (Apex II) I think, can't tell now as all the writing has worn away. Anyway, with a couple of replacement seals over the years, it is still going...........I give the pocket rocket about 2 years of my use.

The stability can be quickly cured with a Primus gas canister leg, which increases the footprint considerably. Used with a MSR titan kettle, this is one hell of combo. Light and powerful.

But...

It always unnerves me using one as it feels like the camp cooking equivalent of balancing a spinning plate on a stick with that tall spindly shape. the burners far too wee as well.
