SteriPEN Traveler 2011

£65.00

LFTO rating rating is 4
Owners' rating rating is 5

Like its bigger brothers, the SteriPEN Traveler operates on the principle that ultra-violet (UV) light can damage microbes’ DNA and stop viruses, bacteria and parasites reproducing. The Traveler is the smaller of the SteriPEN devices, weighing in at just 96g, including batteries. It’s very small and fits neatly in the hand. Indeed its sleek design wouldn’t look out of place in the hands of a business traveller marooned in a dodgy foreign hotel. As with other SteriPEN devices it’s a simple case of loading the batteries, switching it on and placing it into a container of water. A digital display tells you when the water has been treated and is ready to drink. But like other immersion options there is no filter, so you’ll either need to select your water carefully or use additional filtration. Take care that the lip of the container doesn’t touch infected water as this device won’t kill it, so you need to take a little more care. While a litre of water at a time is enough for most walkers, group users may benefit from other devices.

As xkcd points out, the trouble with reviews like this are that I'll continue to give it five stars until I have a brush with explosive dysentery. Thankfully, that hasn't happened. Perhaps I should extoll it's virtues by telling you that I've drank water from rivers in the tropics after using the Steripen and I felt no ill effects? Maybe you'd be interested to hear that it fits into a wide mouth 1 litre nalgene and a 1 litre camelbak with ease? Or, you'd be convinced by the fact that the single button, single indicator LED make it child'splay to use? If you're a gear-k like me, then you'll probably love the fact that it can double as a flashlight... But no, the most compelling argument to buy this is from my experience of ecoli after drinking from a stream on the West Highland Way. This was 10 years ago, before the steripen. Back then there were two kinds of people - those who drank untreated stream water and those who USED to drink untreated stream water. After an unforgettably debilitating attack of everything, I became the latter....
