Meindl Burma Pro MFS 2011

£180.00

The Meindl Burma Pro MFS features nubuck leather; Gore-Tex waterproof lining; memory foam; rubber rand for durability; excellent sole unit for general hill-walking; proven performance and frequent Trail’s  ‘Best in Test’ winner. But its weight of 1948g (pair, size 11) is just too heavy by modern standards; the price is too high compared with other options that provide most of ...

North Ridge Tower Event 2011

£180.00

The North Ridge Tower Event weighs 1704g (pair, size 11); full-grain leather upper; eVent waterproof lining; rubber rand around toe; Vibram sole unit with extremely deep lug pattern for grip and durability; good stiffness in sole unit. But upper is quite soft and unsupportive compared to sole; at this price there are some slightly better boots.

Karrimor KSB Peak Event 2009

£80.00

The Karrimor KSB Peak Event weighs 1400g (pair, size 11); stiff toe box provides lots of protection; Vibram outsole for good grip on a variety of terrain; good cushioning for hard surfaces; eVent waterproof lining. But very soft sole flex restricts performance to level paths; fabric upper not as durable as leather boots and those with less stitching; upper is ...

ASOLO POWERMATIC

£160.00

Review: A full-leather boot with a warm and supportive 2.6-2.8mm upper and a Gore-Tex membrane for waterproofness. Fitwise, it’s slightly broader than average and although the leather upper felt a little uncompromising on first wear, it quickly softened to feel wonderful. It features a good rand so didn’t look too battered after a few rocky outings, and the toe and ...

Mountain Equipment Guide 2009

£40.00

There is a very good pre-curved profile to Mountain Equipment Guide gloves that make them very comfortable, while the fleece lining makes them reasonably warm too. You get a waterproof lining, and this is protected by a leather palm. I found the fit nice and close, and slightly more dexterous than similarly priced options. The wrist cuff is quite short ...

Keen Newport

£70.00

This Keen sandal has shaken up the shoe market since it appeared in 2006 with its unique enclosed toe, where the sole unit moulding is extended around the toe to provide extra protection where it’s needed. The idea has now been copied by many other brands of course. The upper allows your feet plenty of airflow, while offering good protection ...

Brasher Calusa XCR

£80.00

This is a tougher multi-activity shoe than you might expect from Brasher, which is perhaps better known for producing ‘softer’ footwear. The Calusa XCR has a mesh and leather upper with a waterproof lining to provide good protection for the foot. But what sets it apart is the tougher-than-average toe box coupled with a very supportive upper that provides good ...

Craghoppers Nosquito Lite

£40.00

Lovely feel to the fabric and the waist has both a webbing belt and elastic panels for a good fit, but they’re a little loose in the leg. In warmer weather these perform brilliantly – the loose fit and fabric feeling lovely and cool. In fresher conditions they are a tad too light.   Colours: Pebble, cadet, black pepperSizes: 30-42in ...

Snugpak Sleeka Jacket

£80.00

This insulated jacket has a drawstring adjustment for the hem and the collar; one internal and two external pockets all with zips; good-sized stormflaps over the pockets; packs into its own stuffsack; manufactured in the UK; really warm. But it’s bulky when packed and heavy at 596g; add the unisex cut and basic functional design, and you get a pretty ...

Regatta Chandler II

£30.00

These waterproof trousers from Regatta are a good fit, with a functional drawcord/elastic waist and an easily adjustable Velcro tab at the ankle. The Isotex fabric is lovely and soft and they have a comfy lining, too. Not the best to pack, but offer good waterproofness and breathability. The Isotex fabric is tough.   Colours: Midnight, blackSizes: S-XXLFabric: Isotex (polyester)/polyamide ...

Craghoppers Corey

£30.00

Unlike most outdoor companies, Craghoppers has a policy of being carbon-neutral and so with many of the features of this fleece mid layer being similar to many others’, those more ethical credentials give it the edge. At 410g this is reasonably light and the close-knit fabric also makes it a little more windproof than some others, without reducing breathability noticeably. ...

Craghoppers Kiwi Cargo & Kiwi Makino

£40.00

These are classic walking trousers that are well-proven winners on and off the fell. Made from polycotton, so they are fast-drying, lightweight and reasonably durable, the Kiwi Cargo is a more stylish version of the standard Kiwi. The women’s version is the Kiwi Makino, which has a lower waistline than most. You get loads of pockets including two map-sized hip ...

Craghoppers Kiwi Winter Lined

£40.00

These Craghoppers’ Kiwi Winter Lined pants offer a superb fit and a good length; the elasticated waist is backed up with a webbing belt. The fleecy lining is very soft and feels great against the skin. This multi-activity shoe features a Gore-Tex XCR waterproof lining; lots of suede on the upper for durability; solid toe box provides good protection; very supportive heel; very aggressive sole lug pattern is ideal for mud. But you can feel stones through the sole, which lets this otherwise excellent shoe down.

Merrell Moab Ventilator

£55.00

This multi-activity shoe features a very breathable mesh upper; rubber and suede leather reinforcement; very supportive heel; excellent cushioning; typical great Merrell comfort; aggressive lug pattern on Vibram sole. But sole flex is little squishy, so not ideal for rocky paths; toe box could be a little stiffer; mesh upper extends low down so water will get in easily.

Asolo Powermatic 500 GV

This 3-4 season boot is designed for the British market and based around a simple one-piece upper with a waterproof lining and good sole unit. Craghoppers Kiwi Cargo

£40.00

These lightweight trousers from Craghoppers fit extremely well. The cotton content makes them feel incredibly comfortable against the skin and elastic and belt loops fine-tune the waist. The cut of the legs is also excellent. In the dry they are spot-on, and even cope with drizzle. Once truly wet, though, they don’t dry nearly as quickly as the best in ...

But very flexible sole lets down an otherwise promising mountain boot.

A 3-season boot that features eVent waterproof lining; rubber toe bumper for extra durability; solid toe box for foot protection; Vibram sole unit; good stiffness and cushioning for rocky mountain paths; synthetic and suede upper keeps price down. Alt-Berg Fremington

£120.00

These three-season leather boots from Alt-Berg are available in various widths and volumes, as well as half sizes, so most people should be able to get a good fit. That said, the ‘wide’ section of the boot can still feel too far forward for your feet. With a medium-stiff midsole and reasonably high, supportive, full-grain leather upper, the Fremington makes ...

Rab Vapour-Rise Trail Pants

£65.00

These winter trousers from Rab are very baggy, but belt loops and elastic panels still make them wearable. The fleece lining is wonderfully soft, almost luxurious. Fantastic in cold weather and capable of coping with a bit of rain too – feeling warm even when they do wet out, as long as you keep moving. Very light and good breathability.
