Hanwag Ferrata Combi GTX 2008

£15.00

The weight of the Hanwag Ferrata Combi GTX is an immediate attraction as it’s the lightest 4-season boot here. The sole unit is very stiff, making it ideal for mountaineering and use with crampons, as well as via ferrata (as the name suggests). The toe profile also feels very dexterous and ideal for climbing on small footholds. The upper is ...

Khyam Lightbag 150

£20.00

Despite its name, this synthetic sleeping bag from Khyam is actually quite heavy. However, it packs down small and keeps you warm enough, helped by the drawcord hood and shoulder baffle. The cotton inner, which feels really pleasant against your skin, is excellent, although the outer rustles a lot when you move.

Eurohike Adventurer II 200

£20.00

This synthetic sleeping bag from Eurohike is heavy and not as warm as some. It has lots of creature comforts, though, including a concealed  pillowcase, an insulated hood and shoulder baffle, and a two-way zip. The softness of the lining and shell is excellent too.

Millets Eurohike Wilderness A

£25.00

Considering this daysack only retails at £25, you get pretty much all the features you would need for a day out on the hill, including a ventilated back system. The front pocket is a great size and will allow easy access to a map, while bellows side pockets allow you to compress both them and the rest of the pack ...

Khyam Adventure 300

£26.00

This 3-season synthetic sleeping bag has a low price tag; -5 deg C comfort limit; 1810g bag; compression stuffsack; very water-resistant shell; hood fitted reasonably well. But cotton inner is slow to dry; small shoulder baffle; didn’t feel as warm as some bags with this temp rating; zip did snag a little more easily than others; narrower chest than others.

Robens Fairbanks 35 2009

£30.00

The Robens Fairbanks 35 rucksack weighs 1003g; medium back; low price; top pocket plus zip pocket; front bungees; 2 elasticated mesh side pockets; one pole or ice axe loop; simple vented back; black raincover; basic padded hipbelt. But it’s 5 litres undersize at 30 litres so may not be big enough; would benefit from more lid or sack front pockets ...

Aztec Swallow 350

£30.00

This 3-season synthetic sleeping bag has a low price tag; -5 deg C comfort limit; compression stuffsacks; zip did not snag easily; reasonable hood fit; reasonable zip baffle. But heavy (1960g) bag; bigger packed size than higher-priced bags; cotton inner slower to dry than synthetics used in other bags; water repellency not as good as higher-priced bags.

Coleman Exponent Non Stick Cook Kit Plus 2009

£33.00

The Coleman Exponent Non Stick Cook Kit Plus is a two-person pan set that includes 3 and 2.5 litre pots with lids plus a frying pan and a pan grip. The pans have a non-stick finish and circular grooves so that they stick to pan supports better. One lid fits both the frying pan and the larger pan, thanks to ...

Blacks Alpine 30+5 (2011)

£35.00

No award-winner but a fairly capable pack for the price. There are a few technical features that you’d expect to find in a decent walking pack, albeit not quite as well executed as on more expensive bags. A padded back system does boost comfort and keep the load tight to your back, but has no venting at all which does ...

This rucksack has a good adjustable Cool Air back system; lots of padding on back and hipbelt; wand pockets; side compression straps; snow-lock extension; twin main compartments; floating lid with internal and external pockets and stowed rain cover. £35.00

Yet another good, basic starter 41-50 litre rucksack from Regatta. If you have never been out on the hills but want to start then may I suggest you start with this. Euro Hike Hydro 35+5 (2011)

£40.00

One of the cheaper models and as a result doesn’t have the technical features of others. The back system uses simple padding that does keep the load close to your centre of gravity, but doesn’t allow air to circulate and so quickly leads to a sweaty and uncomfortable back. Also it isn’t very well protected and you have to be ...

£40.00

This rucksack weighs 1500g; adjustable back system with airflow chimney; well-padded back and hipbelt; mesh wand pockets; rain cover in base; hydration system-compatible; external, internal lid pocket; superb price. Regatta RSX135

£40.00

This daysack comes with the usual set of features. It has a nice selection of good-sized pockets making the pack functional on the hill, but without making it too fussy and over-complicated. Unusually, this daysack features a snow lock extension for the mouth of the pack along with a compression strap. Outwell Cloud 1900 2009

£46.00

The Outwell Cloud 3-season synthetic sleeping bag has quite a slim-fitting mummy shape, while its three-quarter length zip runs very smoothly and rarely snags. Highlander Neptune

£50.00

This is a relatively lightweight kit bag made from a not very puncture-resistant fabric that is welded at the seams to create a waterproof design. The main closure is a rolltop design to again ensure waterproofness. You get a removable shoulder strap, and you could carry the bag on the shoulders with the standard carry handles. But the main closure ...

Contour Fell

£50.00

These fabric boots from Contour are not the best fitting, being broad and roomy at the toe, yet with a fairly narrow mid section. They’re not helped a lot by the lacing, which uses only five eyelets rather than the usual six. They’re rather heavy and that broad toe makes them feel quite clumsy. The midsole is pretty flexible, making ...

Demon Bracken

£50.00

These three-season leather boots from Demon are very low at the ankle, but still reasonably supportive. They feel good from the off and get even better with distance. Regatta Adventure Tech 35 (2011)

£50.00

A basic-looking pack with all the usual features you would hope to find on a 35-litre pack, but at a more reasonable price. You get a suspended mesh back system, hydration pack-compatibility, a rain cover and somewhere to store your poles. What does suffer, however, is a little reassurance in the quality stakes.
