Regatta Magnitude III

£40.00

An inexpensive jacket, the Magnitude III is as classic an example of a cagoule as you’re likely to see. In use, perhaps not surprisingly, it’s not the most technical, although it is one of the few to come with a mesh-lined inner to help the outer fabric absorb condensed moisture. The face fabric is not that effective when it comes ...

Technicals Limitless

£45.00

A classic pair of stuffable trousers for use when the heavens really open. On warmer days you are highly likely to get a bit of a clammy leg, with the less-than-amazing breathability of the fabric, and a distinct lack of venting on the leg, although in cold Essex snow, that wasn’t a huge problem. Putting them on with boots is ...

Regatta Chandler II

£30.00

While waterproof trousers are notorious for a nuisance rustling noise as you walk, the Chandler II proved remarkably quiet. The softer face-fabric does mean that they are one of the easiest to snag on branches, but the pay-off is that it won’t sound like you’re wearing bin bags wrapped around your legs. They certainly aren’t easy to pull on over ...

Gelert Timor 2010

£45.00

The Gelert Timor is the lowest-priced waterproof jacket featured in our 2010 general-purpose jackets test, and lower-priced jackets are often poorly designed – but like so many other Gelert products this is actually very well-designed. The fabric is waterproof and breathable of course, and there is a mesh lining inside to improve comfort. But it is the jacket’s design that ...

Rab Ultra Gaiter Wmns 2010

£25.00

The Rab Ultra Gaiter Wmns’ eVent fabric is very breathable; durable underboot strap is easy to adjust and replace; Velcro and zips at opening keep gaiter secure. But I found it almost impossible to get the lace hook over my laces and when I did I couldn’t do up the press stud, so not fantastic fit-wise (size M).

Outdoor Designs Wmns Perma Gaiter 2010

£20.00

The Outdoor Designs Wmns Perma Gaiter is a great price considering it’s made of eVent – one of the most breathable fabrics around. I liked the fact that the drawcord sits at the back of the leg, meaning it won’t be uncomfortable when kneeling or scrambling. A front closure consisting of a combination of a zip, Velcro and press studs ...

Blacks Female Gaiter 2010

£18.00

The Blacks Female Gaiter has an easy-to-adjust underboot strap that is simple to replace; zip, Velcro and press stud closure means it stays put; close fit. But it only comes in one size, so those with larger legs may struggle; polypropylene is less breathable than other fabrics costing a couple of pounds more.

Peter Storm Female Gaiter 2010

£15.00

The Peter Storm Female Gaiter boasts a low price; Velcro, zip and press studs ensure it stays secure once fitted; women’s-specific fit means it fits better than some unisex brands. But it only comes in one size, so may not fit those with bigger calves so well; polypropylene is not as breathable as other fabrics; fabric underfoot strap is not ...

Technicals Aurora 2010

£45.00

The Auroras are wonderfully lightweight, but they feel quite plasticky and don’t breathe as well as some. They’re waterproof, though, and are a good choice for emergency use. The openings on each hip give easy access to the pockets in your walking trousers but come at the expense of waterproofness. There’s a zipped rear pocket too. Although there’s a zip ...

Hawkshead Pakka 2010

£15.00

Quite a loose fit but the Pakkas come in two leg lengths to help you get a good fit. The fabric has a good DWR coating so water runs off easily, but it doesn’t breathe as well as some and feels quite plasticky. They’re incredibly lightweight, though, and for only £15, they’re a great choice for fair-weather walkers who carry ...

Berghaus Deluge Overtrouser

£40.00

These are definitely the best waterproof overtrousers for £40 that we tested. In particular they get a long leg zip, making them very easy to fit over boots. That zip also has a double stormflap with press studs, so it will keep out far more water than an exposed water-resistant zip for example. An even nicer addition is the ability ...

Regatta Arroya/Amity

£40.00

This multi-activity jacket weighs 542g (men’s size L); lots of reflective material so you can be seen at night; rollaway hood with reasonable fit and peak; mesh lining adds comfort; two hip pockets; pit zips for venting; stormflap on main zip. But chest pocket is too small for a OS map; hip pockets easily obscured by rucksack belts; more cash ...
