Kathmandu Batangsi 2010

£50.00

Kathmandu is relatively new to the UK but it’s very good for travel gear. Their Batangsi pants are the only trousers we’ve seen that have the option of 3/4 length or full zip-off legs. The zip, however, could rub and cause problems if you have larger thighs. There are lots of pockets on offer, and the material wicks effectively to ...

Merrell Belay 2010

£50.00

Merrell’s Belay trousers come with plenty of stretch, making them very comfortable, if not a little reminiscent of a pair of jodhpurs. These are very practical and technical enough for a day out on the hill. With a UV protection factor (UPF) of 50 these are made for hot weather, and as they are breathable and quick-wicking you shouldn’t be ...

Páramo Azuma Active Pants 2010

£51.00

Made with material that’s easy to wash and dry, Páramo’s Azuma Active Pants are very practical trousers with extra venting at the thigh, and adjustable ankle closures. There’s a good belt and zipped pockets. Great for long days walking in hot countries, but not as flattering as others we looked at. Review by Clare SavageFirst published in Trail magazine April ...

Haglöfs Lite Q Trail Pant 2010

£65.00

Haglöfs’ Lite Q Trail Pants aren’t convertible trousers but they do have adjusters at the ankle. There are two zipped pockets at the back with mesh lining – useful for extra venting. As part of Haglöfs’ Climatic range these are easy to wash and dry, exceptionally comfortable and easily technical enough for long day walks. Review by Clare SavageFirst published ...

Royal Robbins Zip n Go Pant 2010

£50.00

The Royal Robbins Zip n Go Pants were initially very comfy, but it didn’t take long to feel the zip for these convertible trousers rubbing against my leg – and I’m not sure how this would be after a long day in the hills. Zip-off legs with Velcro fasteners at the bottom make them easy to get on and off ...

Vaude Farley Pants 2010

£65.00

Vaude’s Farley Pants are 100 per cent polyamide, with UV protection and mosquito repellent (claiming to repel 95 per cent of mozzies even after 20 washes). They turn into 3/4 length trousers and you can cinch in the leg bottoms. An extra zipped pocket on the right thigh is ideal for passports/documents, feels soft to the skin, is light, comfortable ...

Lowe Alpine Atacama Zip-off Pant 2010

£60.00

If you want a convertible option that allows you to take shorts and trousers in one then Lowe Alpine Atacama Zip-off Pants are a great option. Exceptionally comfortable with an articulated knee for freedom of movement, an ultra-violet protection factor of UPF50 and a zip at the bottom of the leg to get them on and off over boots. Three ...

Patagonia Borderless Pants 2010

£60.00

Part of the ‘Common Threads’ recycling programme, the Patagonia Borderless Pants feature four zipped pockets, a lightweight cool feel and just a hint of stretch, making them a good option for climbing and scrambling or simply leaping over security gates to catch your plane. Craghoppers Bushman 2010

£50.00

Craghoppers Bushman are zip-off trousers with zips at the bottom of the legs to allow you to take them on and off over walking boots. Sizeable cargo pockets make these functional, one zipped pocket offers security, and the Nosquito treatment will keep bugs at bay while the SPF of 40 will keep the sun off. I found the regular size ...

Vaude Farley Pants 2010

£65.00

Perfectly designed for walkers heading overseas, Vaude’s Farley Pants offer sun and mosquito protection and are fast-drying. Offering great comfort thanks to the soft Supplex material and elasticated hipbelt, these were one of my favourites in the test. These offer a 3/4 length option and plenty of secure pockets, and they are one of the most comfortable on test.

Berghaus Departure Pant 2010

£60.00

With Berghaus’s Departure Pant, just a hint of stretch in the fabric really aids comfort on these excellent trousers. Zips at the ankle make getting them on and off over boots easier and zipped pockets at the rear and on the thigh offer secure stowage for non-bulky items. The sheer comfort and practicality of these easy-dry trousers make them a ...

Merrell Meridian 2010

£50.00

Light and airy with just a hint of stretch to the material make Merrell’s Meridian trousers a great option for walkers heading abroad. They feel pretty good on, but I found them slightly too light and baggy to be entirely comfortable: ideal for hot weather but a bit too loose for my tastes. With an excellent ultra-violet protection factor (UPF) ...

Haglöfs Mid Trail Pant 2010

£75.00

The Haglöfs Mid Trail Pant are a durable pair of trousers that aren’t as light and airy as others we looked at but do feel more robust and might suit a wider range of climates. A secure inner pocket and a zipped leg pocket on both legs will accommodate a passport, traveller’s cheques or mobile, and you can cinch in ...
