Eurohike Backpacker II

£40.00

This two-person tent from Eurohike pitches easily (outer-first) and is a good size for two with a nice-sized porch at the front. Reasonably compact and doesn’t weigh much, either. Definitely one for good-weather trips, or purely to see if backpacking’s for you before buying something more expensive.

Coleman Rigel X2 tent (2008)

£80.00

ReviewA very lightweight tent that saves a few grams by incorporating the stuffsack into the groundsheet. Also the pegs are very short, but mainly it is the single-skin design that reduces weight. Pitching is very fast as there are just two poles, which slip through mesh sleeves on the outer. There is a mesh vent in the roof that can ...

Jack Wolfskin Gossamer 2009

£90.00

The Jack Wolfskin Gossamer is essentially a large hooped bivvy bag, but it has many regular tent features and some of its own that make it stand out. Pitching is straightforward with two short poles attached using the secure ring and pin system, and there are lots of guy and peg points available to get it stable. Inside there’s plenty ...

Lafuma Active 2 tent (2008)

£100.00

ReviewA very lightweight tent that pitches very easily as you just slip a couple of poles into the sleeves around the outside of the outer, and a couple of guy lines and pegs finish the task. Ladder-lock adjusters around the base allow easier tensioning too. This is a single-skin tent without a porch, so once you open the outer door ...

Alpinus Ararat

£119.00

A sizeable two-person tunnel tent from Alpinus, but one that is fiddly to pitch (inner-first), and which doesn’t seem to hang very well at all, no matter how many different adjustments you make. It has two good-sized porches – room for storing all your kit – and plenty of sleeping space. Ventilates well, too.

Nordisk Pasch Si 2000 2011

£145.00

The Nordisk Pasch Si 2000 is a roomy one-person tent, very long and wide with an average height, which is fine for sitting upright at the door end. This means plenty of room for internal gear storage, which you’ll need as the porch is quite small, but there’s still room enough in the porch for reasonably sheltered cooking and leaving ...

Vango Ultralight 200

£150.00

This is a very unusual design of 2-person sub-2kg tent yet it benefits from incredible stability and a surprising amount of living space. It is a single-skin tent that pitches far more easily than appearances would suggest. Once erected, the external door gives direct access to the inner living area, as there is no porch. The headroom easily allows two ...

Robens Cloud 2

£150.00

The Cloud 2 is a 2-person tent that’s very easy to put up as it is an inner-pitched-first design with the poles clipping to the outside of the inner. The fly goes over top, and a scattering of hand-friendly pegs finish the job. Ladder-lock webbing adjusters make it easy to tighten the fly, even on uneven ground. There is one ...

Blacks Octane 2

£150.00

For unpredictable UK weather an outer-pitched-first design is my preferred choice of tent as you can pitch (erect) and strike (take down) it in any weather and stay reasonably dry, so full marks to Blacks straight away with the Octane 2. The poles slip through colour-coded sleeves to make pitching easy, and ladder-lock adjustment around the base ensures the flysheet ...

Marmot EOS 1P

£160.00

The EOS is a 2-person sub-2kg tent that pitches very easily inner-first, thanks to all the poles being interlocked with shock-cords to form one single frame that simply clips to the inner. The outer goes over the top, and ladder lock webbing clips make adjustment very easy. To allow variable peg placements the webbing tabs around the base have a ...

Robens Dreamer

£169.00

This 4-person family tent pitches outer-first with three poles sliding through continuous sleeves where one end of the sleeves is sewn shut to make pitching a little easier. Ladder-lock webbing straps around the base make tensioning easy too. Inside you get a massive (220cm) porch at one end, which allows a couple of bikes to be stored or a load ...

MSR Zoid 2

£180.00

This 2-person backpacking tent pitches inner-first with two poles slipping easily through sleeves on the inner. The fly goes over the top and there is good adjustment to allow easy peg placement and tensioning of the tent. There’s a porch and entrance on each side of the tent too, making this ideal for two campers. The outer doors roll to ...

Vango Force Ten Helium 100 2011

£190.00

The Vango Force Ten Helium 100 is a proven one-person tent design that stands up well to the worst of UK weather. The shape is good in a gale, with the internal Tension Band System that allows you to adjust exactly how the centrally positioned single pole tackles the wind. The fabrics are heavy-duty and among the most waterproof in ...

Vango Nitro 200 2009

£200.00

Vango has a wide range of low-priced tents that compete on virtually equal footing with those costing twice as much. The Nitro 200 (like most Vango tents) benefits from the Tension Band System to add extra stability. A weight of only 2300g coupled with good dimensions and that all-important price tag of £200 makes this a strong competitor.   DesignThe ...

Mountain Hardwear Viperine 2

£200.00

The problem with most tunnel tents is that the shape is so tapered that there is limited usable space. The Viperine gets around this problem by using a unique pole configuration, which provides incredible inner space far exceeding that of similar designs. Pitching is easy, thanks to the clear instructions and the hand-friendly pegs. It is inner-pitched-first with the flysheet ...

£230.00

GoLite kick-started the latest phase of lightweight backpacking, and the Eisenhower Tunnel is a 2-person sub-2kg tent that really shows what the brand is about. It is a single-skin design that pitches easily with just two poles and ladder lock webbing adjusters for easy tensioning. The outer doors open from the top or the bottom so you have good ventilation ...

Lightwave t0 Ultra XT 2009

£350.00

The Lightwave t0 Ultra XT is a spacious tent, with room inside for you and some gear, and enough height for me to sit at the door and cook in the porch. The porch is its best feature as it’s massive – there is also a version without the extended porch available. I had a fellow camper sit in the ...
