Petzl Tikka XP

£40.00

LFTO rating rating is 4
Owners' rating rating is 4.5

A classic headtorch that is very lightweight at 106g. It also has three power settings plus flash and boost to 50m. This selection of settings is ideal for walkers and campers, and prevents over-use of battery power as the boost setting is only available while your finger is on the dedicated button. There is also a ‘power remaining’ indicator that is ideal for managing battery life. The head tilts and locks in place effectively thanks to a simple ratchet design. This is a very useful headtorch for walkers and climbers.  But opening the battery compartment is not as easy as some others, while the two small buttons are not ideal when wearing gloves as they are small and closely positioned beside one another. There is no top-of-head strap, so it is not quite a secure on the head as some other designs. The tilting head design is not quite as secure as those with a bolted design either.

Vital stats
Bulbs
1 x krypton bulb
Batteries 3 x AAA (included)
Max burn time 120 hours
Weight with batteries 106g
Made in France
Stores in UK 1,500

Verdict A very lightweight headtorch with very good performance for walkers and campers, but others have some advantages.

I've had 5 head torches over the years, and have been using the Tikka XP for a year now. This is the best I've used - great beam when you want it, with lower power options for in the tent etc. The diffuser is a good idea when you need softer, wider light. It's not too heavy for walking, and seems robust and well made so far. Changing batteries is a bit fiddly and best done in the comfort of home rather than on a dark night!

The New Tikka XP became part of my Mountain kit recently before a 3 month stint working in Oman. Climbing equipment packed I decided a new light head torch was required for over nighters in the Climbing areas to avoid snakes, spiders and Scorpians. First trip the Tikka XP was dug out of the bag and put to use. It's light to the point that after five minutes you forget its sitting on your Nogin. It's amazing torch light illuminates all before you, and climbing is even possible in its clear white glow. Even battery life is excellent in this perfect little bundle. Would be perfect for Snow Bound ventures anywhere in the world too. A perfect companion for any traveller, with an adventourous edge.

This head torch is fabulous. It's very small and light, so easy to fit in your pocket. For such a small light it's more than powerful and the extra light filters you can buy for it make it a good light to use for night navigation. It's good value for money as I picked mine up for £23. You can't quibble at that. To sum up the performance is top rate, quality is top notch and at £23 it's good value.

I got fed up with the performance of my maglites & thought I'd try one of these - and I was delighted with the improvement!!! It produces a clean white light which makes it easy to walk with in dark. Reading at night in my tent is now easier than in daylight. Battery life is great. Petzl are now selling universal mounts for your helmet/bike etc. My only petty gripe is, the torch is a little bulky on your head (although I can still sleep in my tent with it on my head).
