MSR MIOX Purifier

£100.00

LFTO rating rating is 2
Owners' rating rating is 4

This purifier weighs 99g; no pumping required; water tastes good; effective against viruses; allows water to be treated away from collection point. But requires 43g of salt for 200 litres, 2 x lithium batteries and 50 test strips (replacement kit of salt and test strips is £15); takes 30 minutes to treat water; complicated to use; high running costs.

Verdict: Buy it if you want a lightweight system that is very effective, and the service life and running costs are not an issue.

So is this that essential kit to be packed for a couple of days walking. Maybe not… but this is a serious piece of kit that deserves respect! Originally developed for use by the US Military this water purifier works by mixing a very small sample of your suspect water with salt crystals to make a saline solution. Then by passing a strong electric current across it end up creating a very powerful but short lived bleaching agent (MIOX – Mixed Oxide) that when added to your suspect water sample will eliminate most micro-organisms – even that most resilient of water-borne pathogens – Cryptosporidium. Among its advantages are its light weight and ability to knock out viruses that some water filters are unable to remove. However that said it does have a number of disadvantages – for example it relies upon batteries, testing strips and a supply of salt crystals. And whilst it purifies water against most micro-organisms – it cannot be forgotten that other agents such as chemicals (e.g. agricultural or industrial) and solid matter can still contaminate your water supply even after MIOX treatment. So whilst I might not pack this for a weekend walk I would seriously consider it for an expedition abroad where I might question the water supply. A serious piece of kit? Definitely!
