This is a well-proven mountain watch that is built for performance and functionality rather than style and a low price. It weighs 70g, which is reasonable. The design is very ‘military’ in style. But it is the features that really set it apart. You get an altimeter to 10,000m, and there’s a barometer and digital compass. But what I like is that each of these functions has a dedicated button with a name on it which allows you to jump between function much more easily than any other watch we looked at (others have a button that you use to switch between all functions). In compass mode the time is also shown and you get an analogue compass display with blue lines layered over the digital information. The water resistance of the watch extends to 100m, which better than most. Other features include no fewer than five daily alarms, altitude and barometric graphs. This Casio watch delivers all the features that you will realistically ever need and it is highly recommended for serious mountain use. But like other watches the temperature range is only down to -10 deg C, which is surprising when they have beefed up the altitude and water resistance above and beyond normal values. The styling is what may put most people off this watch, as it is pure function in a very militarily-styled green, black and grey housing. A replacement set of batteries cost £6, but if you don’t fancy that extra yearly charge then go for the solar-powered £180 Casio PRG-80L-3VER as the features are identical.

Weight: 72g
Features: altimeter to 10,000m; barometer; thermometer to -10 deg C; water-resistant to 100m
Made in Japan
Stores in UK: no info provided

Verdict: Buy it if you want a lightweight, highly functional watch for mountain walking and you don’t mind the military styling.

My watch is still going strong after ten years and still does the job. The only poor design is the calibration of the altimeter which is a pain but this may be easier on the new models. I still wouldn't be without it as its been everywhere with me.

Had one for a couple years now and love it. Simple, clear and easy to use. The only fault I've found is that the glass does scratch fairly easily. Got a couple of scratches as a momento of a classic scramble up Curved Ridge!

Just a report on the cheap £19.99 Lidl watch/compass/ altimeter. Tried it out on our walk up Moel Siabod yesterday and compared it with Travisb's Suunto as we went. Altimeter readings were very similar, in fact Lidl's went up in .5m increments, Suunto 5m, and we were both a few meters short at the top, probably due to rising pressure since they were set. Compass worked fine but the thermometer only works if you take it off your wrist for half an hour which is not really practical. Oh, and it tells the time too! All in all an excellent first trial and made Travis wonder why he's paid a lot more for his Suunto. Unfortunately they were only available for a limited time so those who snapped them up I think will be well pleased.

Superb watches. I have the solar powered one, which is great. The best part of it i think is the temperature- barometer screen. The watch is big and chunky and very well made. Very good compass too, which is a must on the hills.

Small compass watches

After a very silly wandering around in the fog in Wales one year, I fancied getting myself a compass-watch, but being small and female, most of them give the impression I have a car tyre around my wrist. I don't care about the style, but are there any small ones?
