Petzl has dominated the headtorch market since the 1970s and today the brand is as strong as ever. The Myo RXP is the supercharged version of the standard Myo XP (£65). The big difference between them is that the RXP is regulated and programmable, which means you can choose from 10 settings of how bright the light is and for how long it will remain bright. This is particularly useful if you regularly go on shorter evening trips or long night trips as it is in these extremes that the benefits are most useful. For average use the extra flexibility of this feature is probably not important and you may be better off with the standard Myo XP. With both designs in terms of features you get all the essentials including a battery charge indicator, but you don’t get a red LED option for night vision. The tilt head is excellent, and I also like the flip-down focusing lens that allows the light to be adjusted into a wider but less focused beam, which is useful when picking out a route down a mountain. The Petzl Myo RXP’s button action is very precise, although perhaps larger buttons would be slightly better for use with gloved hands.
