Things to look for in waterproof overtrousers

Waterproof overtrousers will keep your nether regions dry in the eye of a storm – but make sure you’re only paying for the features you need. (For reviews of waterproof trousers, head to the waterproofs section.)
Waist
Elastication in the waistband is the minimum you will need to help ensure that your trousers will stay up, but an adjustable drawcord or even a belt will do the job much more effectively. The ultimate means of keeping your overtrousers up is with a pair of built-in braces. These often come with a higher wast and/or back, which can be a godsend in foul winter conditions – briding the gap between trousers and jacket much more effectively.
Materials
All overtrousers these days are claimed waterproof and breathable, meaning they should keep your legs dry in the rain while being able to transport the sweat and condensation away from your legs. In practise, the differences can be hard to appreciate. Pay more and you’ll get something more breathable and/or lighter, but bear in mind that breathability is less critical on trousers than jackets, and lightweight fabrics are almost always more prone to wear and damage than heavier, cheaper ones.
Side zips
These are designed to let you put overtrousers on without taking your boots off. Short zips are common on lower-priced trousers, while full-length side zips make it easy to put on overtrousers – even while wearing crampons.
Ankle cuff
Look for a trouser cuff that sits over the ankle cuff of the boot without letting water dribble into your footwear. Some overtrousers designed with runners and cyclists in mind have elasticated ankle cuffs, but when used for walking, these often ride up above the ankle cuff and wet feet may be the result.
Fit and shape
The trousers should fit over your normal walking trousers and should neither restrict movement nor flap in the breeze. Fit is very personal and different manufacturers make differently styled trousers, so it pays to try a variety on before parting with your cash.
