What it's like

There are no great hills to climb here but there are plenty of enjoyable walks in beautiful, flat countryside. And there are an array of rural pubs and old fashioned tea rooms to break up your day. This is definitely family friendly walking.
The county stretches from Haverhill to Wisbech and Huntingdon to Ely with pretty villages scattered throughout.

You’ll find plenty of woods, streams, country lanes and chocolate box vistas to keep you happy.

The main city Cambridge, renowned for its historic colleges and stunning architecture, is a fascinating place to discover on foot. Despite an abundance of boutiques and coffee shops , it retains a quaint learned charm with its bicycling students, University shops and punting on the River Cam.

The Wimpole Way, starting in Cambridge is a 13 mile stroll which leads you through gently rolling countryside, and ancient woodland before ending at the spectacular Georgian Mansion Wimpole Hall. Once there you can explore the Capability Brown grounds on a variety of walks.

The 18th Century Houghton Mill near Huntingdon is a working water mill and a great start point for many walks because of its surrounding meadows and willow trees.
Close to the cathedral city of Ely, the Wicken Fen National Nature Reserve is the oldest reserve in Britain and home to wild ponies, otters and rare butterflies. Both are fantastic places for walking.

As well as its famous cathedral, Ely also has a pretty Waterside area and Oliver Cromwell’s house.

So if leisurely countryside strolls with picture-postcard villages, historic landmarks and tea rooms along the way, are your thing, head to Cambridgeshire.
