Those romantic, child-like notions we have about mountains rarely come true. You see one from afar and idly trace a line from the base to the summit, straight as you like and totally uncompromising, and just assume that it will be your route. When you actually get onto the route though harsh reality generally kicks in, and well and truly tips over your apple cart. The ridge you thought would get you past those steep crags ends up being just more steep crags. Or that attractive chain of summits which clearly looked linked are in fact individual tops miles apart, Sometimes, though – and this is the exception rather than the rule – you come across a dream line that is exactly what it looks like from below. So it is with the Brecon Beacons.
