Ben Nevis

Ben Nevis is a big brute of a mountain. It sits with its feet dangling in the tidal waters of Loch Linnhe and its back resting against its fellow giants, Carn Mor Dearg, Aonach Mor and Aonach Beag. To its side is the angular sweep of Glen Nevis, a glen so deep that in its 15km course around the south side of Ben Nevis, its bed barely climbs to a height of 100m. So, surrounded by such low start points, or with the prospect of crossing other big peaks, you can see that from whichever angle you attempt to climb this mountain, you are guaranteed an ascent with a whopping vertical interval. This is, of course, how it should be for the highest mountain in any country; but when you look at all of what else is involved in getting up and down Ben Nevis, you will see that it is not just your average ‘highest mountain’.
