A57 Snake Pass closure

A large landslip on wednesday morning has caused the closure of the Snake Pass route of the A57 between Ladybower Resevoir and Glossop. The heavy rain of the last few days is responsible and the road is not likely to be open until the end of the month at the earliest. The earth is still moving and at present, so no-one has been able to properly assess it due to obvious safety concerns.

Bit of a damp squid for anyone wanting to go up Bleaklow etc this weekend-but there is some good news! The Snake Pass Inn is still open! Reports say the road up to the Inn is still open from the Glossop side to about half a mile past the Inn, so routes up Kinder via Saukin Ridge, Alport Moor and Hope Forest walks should still be possible. Might be worthwhile giving the edge walks on the north side of the Snake Pass a miss aswell, seeing as you might disappear downhill rather quickly!

Re: A57 Snake Pass closure

Thats a real pain as I was aiming to have a toddle around Bleaklow this weekend so will detour and go a little south.  Shame

Has anyone got any piccies of this event and know exactly which section has been affected?:unsure:

An update;

As far as i can find out, yes the road is closed and will be untill later tomorrow at minimum, but there is no evidence of it affecting the Pennine Way where it crosses Snake Pass.

Nothing on the PDNPA website, or any other websites to do with path closures that i can find.

So if like me you are/were planning on heading over that way, you should be ok but make sure you have an alternative route planned just in case.

Still shut today (which meant a 2 hour drive from Manchester to my current contract in Sheffield, which wasn't pleasant). According to the beeb web site, it should be open tomorrow (29th)

Just checked the bbc travel site again, and it's now saying it won't be open until the 31st. Bugger!

Fair enough... I meant if you're coming from the Manchester/Glossop side of A57 or you are going from Kinder to Bleaklow (or vice versa) across the pennine way/nr the snake pass carpark

Freebird, I did the Woodhead on Monday. 2 hours from Manchester to Sheffield. Coming back tomorrow via A623/A6. Variety being the spice of life etc :winkie:

Not a clue. Everytime I check the bbc travel site the date just keeps moving. Yesterday claimed it would be finished today. Today, however it says the 17th. Must use the same people that get employed to cone off the A55 for months on end :mad:

You could be right John, it has disappeared off the bbc travel stop list for Derbyshire. Will give it a go Monday morning :smile
