If you were able to move to anywhere in the country for walking and the outdoors, where would it be?

Ignore access to services, job, friends, shop etc - if you could relocate your entire life, where would you go?

For me, I think it would be Glencoe-ish. The most fantastic hills - long walks, good ridges, some great climbing, right by the sea, access to lots of other big ranges

Having only been to the Lakes a few times and most of them were to Buttermere I don't have much to base my choice on but I know it would be up that way.

Coincidently, Mrs Guinness and I were talking yesterday about relocating, but to Wales, it's closer to our families (Hers in Runcorn and mine in Wolverhampton) than the Lakes and the property rental prices are much cheaper than the Lakes or Peaks. We were looking at properties between Welshpool and Dolgellau.

Great question Robin, Thought about this many times in those "if we win the lottery" conversations. In that hypothetical world I would buy property in Snowdonia, Lakes and NW Scotland. Greedy I know. I also think New Zealand would come into the equation as well.

Without lottery funding then I would probably plump for Snowdonia, just spend most of my outdoor time there, also close to the sea. However I may change my mind after May, I'm spending a week in Torridon.

well robin, i'm happy where i live with all my friends around, but if i had the choice it would be edale or castleton with all the walk's i would want from the front door! "visit the area each year, and allways feel's great to be back"== :-) ====

diabaig......i live in the lakes now and lived in the southern highlands for a few years before so class myself as being very lucky to have a job which 'travels'....we nearly lived in inveralligin which would've been nice, but got outbid on a house by £1k!

 I moved from Basingstoke to The Peak District for work a few years ago (became an instructor at an outdoor centre in Castleton). But the Peak is so central for getting to the other areas, Lakes, Snowdonia, Dales, etc., it's turned out to be a great move. With the clocks changing in 2 weeks time it means that we have a spring and summer of evening cragging and walking to look forward to.

Definitely the Peak District. Probably Edale or possibly somewhere more remote, if we're not taking the practicalities into account.

Husband and I are actually planning to retire to Bakewell in 25 years or so, since we would have some local amenities, with beautiful countryside on the doorstep.

I live in Central Scotland, north of Stirling. It isn't perfect but it is good.

To be honest I haven't got a clue. My favourite place on earth is Skye, but i have so many other favourite places in Britain from east Norfolk to the Scilly Isles, from south Devon to wildest Sutherland. These days though I do most of my walking in Wales, so maybe somewhere on  the Pembrokeshire coast.

Just found out that there's a house for sale in my dream spot! It's a vile bungalow that looks like it's been yanked up from the suburbs and dumped on its present plot. It's also in the middle of nowhere (for me at least, as I can't drive). Still, if I suddenly happened to win a quarter of a million on the lottery, I'd be very tempted! It'd be worth it for location alone and all the gorgeous walks I'd be able to do from the doorstep.

Spean Bridge. You can be just about anywhere else in Scotland within 1 hours drive give or take 10 minutes.

somewhere my property wouldn't get vandalised by pesky school kids. With the walking, outdoors in consideration I would like to be self sufficient in the Buckden/ Yockenthwaite area. Just need to win the lottery :D

That's a good call gcjh!

Also access to sea, mountains (with almost guaranteed winter conditions), skiing, mountain biking, canal and lochs, relative wilderness, some great kayaking rivers.

Also we had a great week there years ago, and the local pub didn't know what time last orders was

Without a doubt common as the reply may be the lake district, mountain high, valley deep I know there is bigger and possibly better but most folk warm to it.... Along the lines of a lottery win little cottage on the Norfolk coast as a viable alternative wouldn't go amiss either!

I've already relocated my life. Used to live in Australia, live in Manchester now. It's much better here. I get to somewhere in the Peak District nearly every weekend, and when I'm not walking there I've got easy access to North Wales and the Lakes. If I didn't live here I reckon I could be just as happy in Sheffield, for the same reasons - it's a city and it's got easy access to my favourites hills.

Sooooo.........in a well to do area, near fabulously named shops, plus near a decent coffee shop in a delightful garden centre, no motorway within 5 miles, the promise of quiet, but friendly neighbours (who have the right pedigree, naturally). that's her.

and for me..............umm.......opening the windows to glorious mountain views, maybe a lake nestling within. A quiet road, privacy intact..........a place where I can throw my boots on and walk - not drive - to a hilltop/peak, a pub within staggering distance.

I guess it's a divorce then.

I'm happy where I am too. I love the countryside, but I like suburban convienence too. I've got the Peak District within half an hour, can be in the Lakes or Snowdonia within 3 hours so easy enough for a weekend, 4 hours puts most of England and Wales' National Parks in reach. I'm on the edge of town, can see some fields from the bedroom window at the back of the house, and the trees of an ancient woodland out the front. In 4 minutes walk I can be in there, and 15 minutes and I'm out of the city, yet all mod-cons on the doorstep. Sorted!

Pupil: An hour? A short walk? Why? What do you call a long one? Me: Oooh.... about 3 days. 2nd Pupil: Where do you sleep???! Me: Errr... In a tent!
