What's your ambition for 2012?

Hi all, it's Nick from Country Walking. Hope you're all splendid and in good form. We're chatting about our ambitions for 2012 and they're ranging from lovely and simple "just walk more" to "get to Everest basecamp", with the Pennine Way, South Downs Way, Scafell Pike and the Beacons Horseshoe in between. What's your big walking ambition for 2012?

 For me its.....

Spending more time exploring 'up north' especially around Yorkshire. Eating a curry in Bradford, visiting Bolton Market & Grimsby fish Market, eating fish & chips in Whitby etc. To be honest anything north of Watford is pretty much 'Missionary country' to me.

Looking further afield its not passed my notice that Japan seems to be dodging every attempt I make to return. Want to spend some time climbing in the Japanese alps and exploring more of Hokkiado during winter.

From a skills perspective I'd love to improve my skiing to the point I was confident enough to go ski touring. Maybe tackle the Haute route Chamonix to Zermatt.

1.  I need the business to go really well in the new premises, so that I can leave it to go walking more often.

2.  I need the business to not go so well that we're flat out and I'm working non-stop, and can't get out walking!

So my ambition for 2012 is to sort the work/life balance, and be grateful for any spare time I get - I'm lucky to live on Dartmoor, good walking on my doorstep!

I'm going to try and invent a new style of walking for the hills. I have been working on a few and have a few names....scattling, scoffling and scruffling are provisional names and the type of walk I am favouring at the moment is similiar to when you walk along with one foot on the pavement and one in the road (like on a very narrow or busy path) I hope this style of walking can be adopted somewhere in the hills...

The Magpie Cafe teakeaway in Whitby is good. Plus the Cleveland Way goes through Whitby and there are lots of good walks on the North Yorkshire Moors. I guess my ambition is to go to the chippy less and walk more!

can't  wait to get back to the dark peak. the plan is to do '2' twelve to forteen mile solo walks. the wife is my loyal walking partner, but it's nice to have two day's alone, "i know", it's sad! but i luv it. the walks are kinder scout, and alport moors. the plan is to start early and not see any one all day. 1) get to the gym more often, should be easy as I've been once in last 2 months

2) get back into the hills

3) take part in the Mens Health Survival of the fittest in Cardiff in October 2012.. sort of a 10K obstacle course.

The short LDPs Angelzarke Anguish and Angelzarke Amble in early Spring as well as lots more trips up to my beloved Pendle Hill as often as I can manage whilst building up to the Yorkshire 3 Peaks in June (again), then the Helm Wind walk any point in the summer. Followed by anywhere that takes my fancy for the rest of the year.

After reading the Jan issue of CW I suppose I'm going to have to take up Geocaching...

My other ambitions for the coming year are to actually get round to walking the Derwent Valley Heritage Way, go wild camping at least once, get back into regular YHA visits and generally go out and walk around a bit. Living on the doorstep of the Peak District seems to inhibit outdoor activity! Hoping to be around this place a bit more as well.

Re: What's your ambition for 2012?

My husband and I have a few objectives for the year. My kids enjoy walking, but are still quite young, so some of my ideas for walks will have to be carried out when they're at their dad's.

1: Marsden to Edale, via Black Hill, Bleaklow and Kinder Scout. I'm told the ascent on this route is the equivalent of going up Snowdon twice.

2: The Edale Skyline

3: Walk from Smithills (Bolton) over the moors to Darwen, to visit my mum-in-law. She's not a mum-in-law of the dragon variety, so it's worth the walk. Bet she'll get her boots on and meet us somewhere en-route.

4: Get the kids onto Kinder Scout for the first time.

5: Join a local walking group. By doing so, I'm hoping somebody will be able to give us a lift to the Lakes or Snowdonia now and again.

6: Do a winter skills course.

7: Wild camp for the first time.

You mean apart from having more sex ?

Well my walks have become fewer and fewer due to a flat buying process, refurbishment, and now possible relocation. So hoping that all comes to fruition next year, so days off are once again planned round the outdoors, rather then the indoors.
