Hi guys some answers to the posts above...

I booked the course with Rob Johnson WWW.EXPEDITIONGUIDE.COM It was £130 for a two day intro to scrambling course at a ratio of 1-2.We went up Y Gribyn Ridge onto Glyder Fach and then onto Glyder Fawr, we then dropped down into the Devils Kitchen it was a truly fantastic day....

The pics are of Tryfan from Y Gribyn Ridge and the Llyn is Llyn Idwal,i'll post some more on this post....this course has given my walking a whole new dimension I just can't wait to get back out there..i'm one very happy new walker..

The pics below are of Snowdon from Glyder Fawr

Re: Intro to Scrambling

 Hi

In the past Trail have done courses at Plas Y Brenin in Snowdonia on Scrambling. I wonder if we should set one up again? If there is some interest perhaps we could look into it again?

I did my training at the Brenin way back in the 80s and it was great. These courses might sound expensive, but you only do them once and then you are set up. Also of course you are getting one to one or one to two client instructor ratios, so a day is always going to cost a few quid. So I think they are great value mainly as you only need to do them once.

I did Y Gribin ridge in the height of Summer, stunning, that was on a Plas y , ML course. The courses at Plas y are very recommendable, facilities are excellent, food is great and all in all the tuition is spot on and enthusiastic.

sounds great

I did a winter skills course with Rob earlier this year in Fort William, he certainly knows his stuff and is a top bloke and very good teacher.  I wonder if the cantilever is the most photoed rock formation in the UK?  I seem to have loads of them with me posing, in snow, with groups, alone, at night...

Did a 5 day walker to scrambler course at PYB in August. I agree, that it opens up a lot more of the hills and gives me some needed variety to my walks. The course I attended covered such routes as Tryfan, Bristly Ridge as well as the aforementioned Y Gribin (all done in the soaking rain and almost nil visibility alas) and was worth it for the excitement, especially on some of the more exposed bits.

The only downside is the weather has been poor since and I have not really been able to "kick on" What little I have done has been accompanied by wet, greasy holds, and no views at the top which takes some of the enjoyment away for me.

Hi

I wouldn't say favouritism especially, unless you think saying what you have used is favouritism!

Used Glenmore Lodge for winter skills too by the way and hired a guide in the alps too. All were great? Is that favouritism?

Not a dig at you Bedouin but the common perception that mountain training costs a lot is a bit of a myth.  When you look at the cost of IT training, for example, and compare it to what instructors charge for outdoor work, and the ratios thay operate to, then learning in the mountains is peanuts.  And the trainers are out working in sometimes 'challenging' conditions with few statutory tea breaks.  And if they screw up its not a matter of re-booting a computer.......

Most Instructors are happy doing it because they love it and recognise that rewards are not just financial.  But if you look at something like an ML training course what other sector are you going to find a 6 day residential course including a minimum of 60 hours direct tuition for about £400?

 Hi

How much are you prepared to pay for an outdoor instructor?

I had my trees cut down by a tree surgeon the other week and they charge £25 per hour per person.

A hair cut can cost £8 for 15 minutes, which is £32 per hour.

I've done ML training at PYB and done weekend courses with Rob Johnson. Both seemed very good value to me. With Rob you get a lot of 1:1 or 1:2 tuition which means you can learn a lot in a short time. Also can endorse tryfans comment about Rob being a good teacher and a top bloke.

I think PYB is good value for money, I've paid lots more money just for half board hotels that couldn't hold a candle to the accommodation there (well it is a converted hotel!), nevermind that the instruction and full board is included as well.

Hi all and thanks to Wayne, Paul & Russ for the kind words. My head is growing by the minute!

I would be more than happy to organise a scrambling course for Trail. I recently took Nicki Giles on the Clogwyn Y Person Arete for a Trail feature on Alpine Style scrambling and we had a great day despite some very un-alpine weather!

All the best

Re: Intro to Scrambling

Graham, I totally agree that it would be a good time to do a scambling course BUT by coincidence I was reading a PLB brochure (free with Climb this month) and was pretty gobsmaked at the prices apparently they're a charity!!!!!

Despite wanting to do a mountaineering course of some sort I've decided to put it off until next year when I'll be spending around 6 weeks in the Canadian Rockies. From my reseach the Canadian courses I've seen appear far far better value. 7 days in Canada is cheaper than 5 at PLB.... also the website just looks so professional, makes the PLB one look postitively amateur.

I'm almost certain that this is the course that I'm going to do.....

http://www.themountainschool.com/complete-mountaineering-plus.html

So, I'm up for a course but I'm not going to pay an arm and a leg for it!

But that's £700 for instruction (if my sums are accurate) and you've got to sort your own accommodation and meals and arrange your own transport to the hills?

They must do hellish good cakes!

Re: Intro to Scrambling

Now then, Clogwyn Y person Arete ? Didn't Claire Maxted do that a while ago for Trail ?

Myself and Old Stephen were going to give it a go a few weeks back but the weather was against us so we did the Snowdon Horseshoe instead, great day out with brilliant company.

Clogwyn Y Person is on my 'to do' list, anyone fancy arranging a date and seeing if Rob could come down for a few quid and guide us over it ?

Rob how many would you be happy to lead over it ? Am i right in thinking its a grade1 / 2 scramble ? I've done grade 3 and some roped climbing . Anyone else ? Perhaps a quick list, get Trail down to assist and take some photos.

Then the pub ! Perfect day out.
