In a recent issue Trail put the three most fuel efficient stoves to the test. See how they compared here. Have you tried any of these out on the hill? How were they for you?

I'm the not so brand new website slave!

sorry terrybnd but the only way I'm taking alcohol up a hill is in a little metal flask to drink at to top before tucking myself in for the night

Pure Meths, mate.

So, not summat you can drink!

I bought one 0.5l bottle for £3 from Homebase round the corner from me.

Been on 3/4 wild camp trips min 2 nights and used the meths stove....I still got half a bottle left!!!

I kid you not....its the most fuel effecient stove I've ever used.

You get a small squeezy bottle for the fuel as storage etc....a gentle squeeze of this bottle for say 4-5 secs...gives enough fuel to burn 750ml of water in about 4 mins.

Brilliant! Reliable! Fuel effecient! Most stable stove I've come across of its kind....love it.

See Bob n Rose too.

They now design these for specific pots. The reason your Titan kettle fits 'snug as a bug' is because the stove was designed for it.They also design them to fit other pots such as the Vargo stuff etc etc.I was thinking of getting one last summer but knew no one who would recommend them.I use a snow Peak gigapower stove, best can stove I have found.

I will give it a try Terry.I believe you can also use solid fuel with it?, sticks etc.

Anyone using the Honey stove??

The sum of all you know, will be forever dwarfed, by what you have yet to understand.

The standard caldera cone should be only used with alcohol (meths) or esbit tabs at a push, if you want to use sticks as fuel you need the titanium version.

Why not make a cone anyway - www.youtube.com/watch

Well, I knew that mate when I ordered it!

Yes, folks...you can buy em to fit to specific pots you may own. In my case a Titan Kettle.

The cone itself is very very very stable even in winds.

And acts of course as a very effective wind shield.

Its a cracking bit of kit....

Used in my tent, out the tent....

You may be aware it may smell a bit when in the tent...but TBH it's no worst than the smell from a gas cannister.

Its very quiet by its nature....no simmering can be done....and you can't use other fuel...well, you could but Twigs covers the bases.

As for safety...its no different to using a gas sourced stove. In fact, with this stove the Caldera cone jobby, I think it feels safer.

Of course, common sense is the order of the day in all of this.

Meths on its own is smelly and not something you want to get everywhere...so care needs to taken with the bottle. Again, common sense.

As a package it may be on the bulky side compared to a Pocket Rocket but it weighs less with fuel than gas, kettle and stove.

Light as a feather.

For boiling water for freeze-dried meals, coffee etc eben cooking a Wayfarer...its ideal.

Once you used the stove, the handles are REDHOT on the kettle. But give it a minute and its fine to handle ....same for stove itself.

If your paranoid about losing heat from the kettle etc...you can buy some thermawrap and make a little cozy? Stick ya Wayfarer or Look What We Found meal in for a few minutes no problem.

Like I said...I love the new toy!! Brilliant!

I really do not know why I've never purchased this kit before. I'm not going back to gas thats for sure.

This is a little more fuel effecient system for me and more reliable to in adverse conditions.

Love it!

Like the simple design of the caldera, but how does it store ? Any pics of it stored ?

If you make one, I suppose you could design around using a Trangia Meths burner that you can pick up for around £5 which does include a simmer cover and cover lid to store unused meths.

the cone stores in a supplied plastic container.

mick, you measure the fuel you put in, this is usually about 25-30ml to boil 500ml of water, the stove burns itself out though you can stick a mug or something similar over it to cut off the air supply and sbuff it out.

Re: Which super-efficient gas stove is right for you?

I thought folks might be interested in this stove....

If weathers OK I'll do an out in the field review on video in 2 weeks? That was my plan. I had reservations about meths stoves...talked about it with folk like twiglegs etc.....came up with my own thoughts and chose the stove above.

I thought about how it would really be to deal with out on wild cmaps in all sorts of conditions.

So, I tested it for 4 nights in varying conditions in my back garden....checked for things like...does it burn the grass underneath therefore a potential fire hazard (especially in the Peaks)....and so on.

I did allsorts of prellimanry testing including in my tent ...then off I went into the hills for real....and its gets a thumbs up from me.

The kit all goes in a caddy tub....including fuel. Food grade plastic too...but I aint fussed about that.

But, you can fit it all into your MSR kettle except the windshield/support. This though can be rolled within your foam mat as an example.

As for cooking...I don't actually measure the fuel From practice I knew that squeezing the fuel bottle for approx 4 secs did enough burn time for a cup of tea.

A squeeze for approx 5-6 secs does enough fuel to boil water for a meal.

I got it nailed on by practicing at home with a measuring jug.

So, I pour in the fuel, light it....and when its burnt out? The water has just been rolling boil for a couple of minutes!

Perfect!

It look better on screen TBH.....

how much does the cone weight?

i have built a captain paranoia coke can stove, and am now thinking of building a caldera style, um, shroud? the cone bit to hold the pot and keep the heat in.

not seen active use yet, just the garden.

Off top of my head...dunno....

But it weighs sodall TBH. Its a think sheet of aluminium.

The stove you can imagine weighs ever so slightly more.

BTW. kesh...if you're the guy I think you are on OM forum (IF not ...apologies)...cheers for mentioning the UTM application for GPS phones. Bloody brilliant that is!!
