Hi, I'm looking for some new boots but have a rather nasty bunion to accommodate. Does anyone know of any wide-fitting ladies boots which might fit the bill? Thanks, Andrea

There are a number of options for the wider of foot (I know because I'm one of them), but all of them start with getting your feet properly measured at an outdoors shop with a Brannock device. This measures both length of foot and width across the broadest part - ie. the bunion. The assistant should be able to suggest suitably wide boots - Meindl, Mammut and Brasher all have a reputation for making broad shoes, but do try a wide range of models and makes as it's about which follows the shape of your foot. I've always had luck with Salomon, and I always opt for the men's version (which generally start from a size 6) as they tend to be wider. Some shops are also able to finesse the fit just for you, using a rubbing bar to stretch the leather around the toe joint to provide a bit of breathing room. If you're still not having any luck, try Alt-Berg who make made-to-measure boots (they can also customise off the shelf boots). The work doesn't come cheap - the last starts at £250, plus the cost of boots - but if it means comfy feet it's worth considering. And I don't know if you've already sought help for your bunions - and there is a hereditary factor which you clearly can't do anything about - but orthotics can help your feet move correctly and prevent bunions getting any worse.

I have used shed loads of different boots over the years and although I do not suffer from foot related issues, I can understand the issue, having spent a couple of days in a warm water bath trying to recover from frozen foot nerves following exposure to the elements, due to a mixture of crap boots and bad admin on my part (Although I was 17 at the time). Since that time, I swore I'd pay attention to my feet and improve my admin. My recommendation for boots since that occassion, approx 20 years ago...oh, how time flies, has always been Meindl as they have worked for me in many countires and under severe stress, however, Altberg boots are fab too.....their bespoke service is awesome.....and well worth the saving for. A good pair of boots can last years and years (Depending on a few factors) but my advice is treat your foot issues before purchasing a 'quality pair of boots'. Truth be told, no matter how expensive or high quality your boots, you wont get very far with knackered feet.

I just saw your post because I have recently started suffering from bad bunion pain - seems a lot worse when I wear stiff boots compared to soft trainers. Did you have any luck in sorting your bunion problem?Could you lend me any advice?

I swear by Salomon boots. As an ex ballet dancer i've got mammoth bunions and very wide balls of my feet, and skinny heels & ankles. Unfortunately most UK shops don't seem to carry ladies salomon leather boots, they've gone to fabric. So you might need to hunt around a bit, or avoid the bog :)

I''m looking for a decent flask. I've tried several but they're not keeping warm for long even after pre-warming. I'm going om MT winter skills course in 5 weeks so need to get something good for then.
