I have a Nokia N82 phone which has a GPS receiver. I have installed the Viewranger 1:25000 OS maps of my local area and the whole thing works superbly. My problem is carrying the phone so that it is easily accessible when walking. Obviously the pouch or holster would need to enclose the phone securely and since the GPS aerial in the phone needs to have a clear view of the sky, it needs to be carried high up on the body.Does any such carrier exist?

We asked the folk at Viewranger for some recommendations and this is their reply:“On wet days I use one of the HAGLÖFS Watatait mobile pouches. It can be hung round the neck or has a clasp that allows it to be clipped onto straps. Click here for their full range. Most outdoors stores will have an equivalent product - I chose this one as it looked best in the store I visited, I didn't test others.“A disadvantage is that you have to take the phone out of the pouch if you wish to use the phone's built-in camera, but this is true for most pouches and cases for cameras and phones.“I've found keeping the phone in a pocket gives acceptable GPS reception - in the map pocket of my jacket, or in the summer in a trouser cargo pocket, though that depends on your activity.“And to be honest freezer bags can be useful as an alternative or supplementary waterproofing.”For more information on Viewranger go to: www.viewranger.com

Hi From personal experience I would suggest that you do NOT attach or store your mobile in you sac. I had a very bad fall in NOV06 and fell over 200 feet. My sac was ripped off my back. Due to my injuries, I was unable to recover it. Fortunately I keep my mobile in a chest pocket of my jacket at all times. It was also in one piece!! and had a signal, so I was able to call for help.

I once left my Gps on scafell after using it get a grid ref, then putting it down to use my compass so I would recommend whatever method you use attach it with a lanyard to a different part of your pack.

I've got a Lifeventure mobile phone pouch - they should be available from outdoor shops. It's got a clip, a belt loop and a pair of velcro strips which you can use to attach it to your rucksack shoulder straps - so you can hang it wherever you like.

There are a range of pouches/holsters available from various manufacturers, and most will attach to either hip belt or chest strap. Easy to get at yet out fo the way when not needed that way

How good are products like the Grivel Spider and Cotswold Magic Spiker and are they suitable for hill-walking?
