What waterproof over trouser is better to use for year round use, Goretex Paclite, or 3 layer eVent? I'm specifically looking at Mountain Equipment Firelite and Montane Venture pants.

For year round use I would say look at a 3-layer fabric, which means either 3-layer Event, 3-layer Gore-Tex Proshell or 3 layer Gore-tex Performance Shell. Gore-Tex Paclite is a 2.5-layer fabric and this means you tend to see the build up of condensation much more easily and many people assume the fabric is leaking but it is usually just condensation. Gore-tex Paclite is much lighter and more packable than 3-layer fabrics and this is why it is still popular, as it is ideal for travelling light and fast or for taking as a backup garment. However for year round use, you are going to need something that hides as much condensation as possible and therefore a 3-layer fabric is a better option. The performance difference between 3-layer Event and 3-Layer Gore-tex Proshell or Performance Shell is barely noticeable, if noticeable at all so I would just choose a pant made in any of these fabrics that fits. Gore-Tex Performance Shell is not quite as breathable as Gore-tex Proshell, but again I doubt you would notice much - if any - difference. When it comes to models to choose, always try them on before you buy, as fit on trousers is incredibly personal - we all have different leg lengths, bum sizes and thigh sizes. Just compare a rugby player‘s legs to those of a long distance runner for example and you can imagine the problems! The Mountain Equipment Firelite is a Gore-tex Paclite pant, so as mentioned above is probably not your best option, unless you want low weight and low packed size as your primary criteria, in which case of course it would be ideal. The Montane Venture Pants are made from 3-layer Event and so from the two you have suggested I would say these would be a better year round option, if packed size and weight are not your number one priority.
Both of the trousers you mention are priced around the £100 mark, so the others that may be worth considering include:Berghaus Storm Overtrousers – 3-layer Gore-Tex, £90Sprayway Mountain Rain Pant – 3-layer Gore-Tex £100Lowe Alpine Fairview Pant – GoreTex paclite £100The North Face Varius Guide Pant – HyVent 2 layer £90Click here to check out our reviews of waterproof trousers.

I had my Berghaus Paclite trousers on on sunday while walking on the Kinder. The weather was atrocious, but the trousers did their job and I was warm and dry when I returned to the car.

Hi, I see ea few here are bigging up the Berghaus Aquafoil, but personally I don't like it. If your trousers are probably going to get used more often when your out walking than not, then after a while you'll find they start to lose their waterproofing, as Aquafoil, I'm told, is really just chemically treated nylon. However I have a pair of Berghaus Storm Overtrousers (GoreTex ) and they're fantastic. I've used them on Dartmoor all year at least 3 times a month and have no complaints, full length zip goes from ankle to higher thigh, and you can zip from the top down too for venting if its just showery, and the breathability is great. Although they don't pack down quite as well as the Paclite goretex they're still pretty lightweight, and personally I'd rather go for a more hard-wearing fabric. Also i got my trousers off eBay for just over £60! However if you only want either Paclite or 3 layer eVent then i'd go for the eVent, being more durable, but good ol' GoreTex never lets you down!

I''m looking for a decent flask. I've tried several but they're not keeping warm for long even after pre-warming. I'm going om MT winter skills course in 5 weeks so need to get something good for then.
