What sort of gear should someone with a young child take into the hills?

You will need to think in terms of two kit lists – one for you, containing heavy things like food, and one for your child – to make sure you both enjoy the day. There are several other things to consider which will make the day more comfortable:
- Take a small shelter for you both, which would be exciting to use and ideal for rest stops.
- Pack a few tasty treats in your own sack, for when enthusiasm and energy levels are waning.
- Carry a big magnifying glass so you can look at interesting creepy-crawlies along the way. Also bring a flower book and animal book, so you can spot flora and fauna. - Choose the right route – one that allows lots of breaks and escape routes. Plan it together to get them involved, and make sure it’s well within your child’s abilities so they enjoy it, complete the route and want to come back for more.
