What does 35+8 mean on a rucksack if it doesn't have a detachable daysack? Does it mean the rucksack has a 43 litre capacity or 35?
By Country Walking magazine
Rucksack sizing is a mysterious art, with packs covered in all kinds of numbers. If a rucksack sports a sizing such as 35+8, it means that the main compartment has a 35-litre capacity, but there are roomy side pockets and/or a floating lid (a lid attached to the pack with extendable tapes rather than sewn on, so it lifts as you stuff your pack fuller and fuller), which can increase the capacity by another 8 litres. So packed full, it’ll have a capacity of 43 litres. One thing to remember though - packs labelled the same size do seem to vary from one manufacturer to another. So it’s worth taking all your walking kit down to the shop when you buy, and spend an afternoon packing and unpacking rucksacks to find the perfect one for you.

well sort of 38l ... but if you are really good at stuffing and dont mind filling those side pockets to the max you can probs just about get in 43l ... but rarely expect it to be comfy fully packed unless you are an ultralighter ... eg berghaus airspace 35+8 man sure gave me a pain in the back fully loaded .... whenever they say +this and +that just go for the 35 or 40 and no+ just take the + if you want to take an extra candy bar or two.

I''m looking for a decent flask. I've tried several but they're not keeping warm for long even after pre-warming. I'm going om MT winter skills course in 5 weeks so need to get something good for then.
