I am quite new to the outdoors but bit of a gadget freak and would hate to buy the wrong one, could anyone please advise if there is one outstanding winner between the Garmin Colorado and the Satmap Active 10?

Both units allow you to see exactly where you are on screen and watch your progress - it's like reading a conventional map, but you always know where you are thanks to the GPS receiver plotting your course for you. Both units will also point you in the right direction to your next target, which is key for navigating in the hills.

The main difference is in the mapping - the Satmap Active 10 has the advantage of displaying Ordnance Survey quality mapping in full colour on screen. The Garmin Colorado is not able to display this mapping software and instead has a more basic style of maps, that are adequate and certainly better than having no maps at all, but are nowhere near as useful as the Ordnance Survey maps.

Other features on the units are more down to personal preferences in terms of how easy you find each to operate and which operating system you like.

Be aware that the Colorado is still a very new unit. I have a 300 and like a number of people am having issues with it. Garmin WILL sort it out but in the mean time its frustrating Check out he forums on Groundspeak.com for more info Bedouin
