I want to start planning my own routes. Can I estimate how long a walk is going to take simply by looking at the map?

You can, by using Naismith’s Rule. Measure your route on the map with a map measurer or piece of string, and count up all the contour lines in ascent. Naismith reckons that you’ll walk at around 4km/hr and that you’ll need to add on 30 minutes for every 300m of ascent on your route. So if your route is, say, 12km and you’re climbing 1219m it’ll take 3 hours to cover the distance and another 2 hours for the ascent. That’s five hours to do the whole route.

Time yourself on the actual the route so you can customise Naismith’s Rule for your next outing. It might be that you actually walk faster or slower than Naismith’s estimate of 4km/hr.
