How do I cope with tricky scrambles?
Answer
By Trail magazine
Some of Britain’s most famous outings such as Crib Goch include scrambles, or sections of intimidating terrain where a slip could be very serious. For less experienced walkers this can be daunting.
So, research your trip beforehand. The key is relating skill level within the party to the overall plan of the day, and balancing this against the weather, rock conditions, equipment carried and so on. But how do you deal with unexpected difficulties? Spot the early warning signs, and modify your route accordingly.
The Mountain Leader Training Association says…
Missing contours and black lines mean craggy ground. When the map shows craggy ground, it is usually worse than it implies!
If craggy terrain reduces route-finding choices there could be scrambling ahead.
Don’t start ascending anything you can’t easily descend.
Check everyone is still comfortable.
If in doubt, get out!
For mountain walks, carry a length of rope and learn how to safeguard a retreat.
