I have a pair of Salomon walking boots which are pretty old. I’ve not used them for a while, but they’re still comfy and I am doing a lot more walking recently so want to know how to look after them. Problem is, I'm not sure what they're made of so I don’t know which product to use. How can I tell? They seem like they might be leather, but they're light grey, and haven't gone 'crispy' despite the lack of attention.

The easiest solution is to take the boots to your local gear shop, where the staff can look at them and supply you with appropriate products to put the life back into them. Otherwise, try the manufacturer's website, they're packed with information and may well have material details for your particular boots.

The main suppliers of bootcare products are Nikwax and Granger’s and within these ranges there are products such as Nikwax Footwear Cleaner and Granger’s G-Max Footwear Cleaner which are effective on all footwear.

The waterproofer you choose will then depend on whether the boots are made of all leather or a mix of fabrics, such as synthetic materials and suede - any shop stocking the above products will be able to advise which are appropriate for your boots.

Their either gonna be fabric or leather.

Fabric boots tend to have more stiching on em, as theyre often made of panels of material rather than one bit.

Leather boots can be slightly heavier, often have less stiching on em, made of one piece rather than panels etc.
