How do I keep my hands warm on winter walks?
By Country Walking magazine
You know the phrase - cold hands, warm heart. But when your digits are ice all you think is cold hands, cold hands. Start with mittens – they keep hands cosier than gloves, as your fingers share heat. Make sure they cover your wrists and listen to what mother used to say and tie them to your jacket – might feel silly but not as silly as watching your mitts blast off a precipice. Still cold? Wiggle your fingers to get blood flowing, or windmill your arms to force warmth to the fingertips. Then try stuffing your hands in your armpits or, um, groin. Last resort? Try external heat sources like hand warmers or clasp frozen digits round a nice cup of coffee – staying hydrated aids circulation but caffeine restricts it, so go decaff. And relax - stress restricts blood flow so raging at freezing tootsies will only make them colder.

HiGear 'charcoal' handwarmer. If it's really cold you can light both ends or break the rod in two and light four ends. It's not too bulky and I can get it inside my Buffalo mitts. http://www.gear-zone.co.uk/eshop/Hi-Gear-Hot-Pocket-Handwarmer.html

Mittens are better than gloves, as they share the heat betweent he fingers. Even though i feel the cold i still use gloves, as i need the finger movment.

If anyone suffers from cold hands a pair of good mitts seem to work better but of course they are not as useful as gloves.I do not suffer greatly from cold hands and manage to get away with thin gloves most of the time with a thicker pair in my sac, most of the time on easier walking I prefer to have my hands in my pocket (yes I know it's not very good if you go base over apex)

Don't let them get cold in the first place. Seriously, gloves are insulation, not heating.

HiTake two pairs of gloves. Then swop them over half way around when one pair is usually wet inside. This is key in winter or really wet weather as keeping the insides dry is hard work.GT

I''m looking for a decent flask. I've tried several but they're not keeping warm for long even after pre-warming. I'm going om MT winter skills course in 5 weeks so need to get something good for then.
