Try the 211-mile John Muir Trail. Named after the famous naturalist, this hike runs from Yosemite to Mt Whitney, through some of the most spectacular scenery in a spectacular country. It’s no easy jaunt – the peaks crag over 4,000m high and the canyons slash deep, but at least it’s sunny, being California and all. Do note, the trail ends on Whitney’s summit, the highest point in the lower 48, so add another 11 miles and 1,800m of descent. And if you want to keep walking, try the entire 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail.
