I'm going walking in the French Alps. Would a new camera with a long telephoto lens be good or will my existing compact 3" zoom suffice?

Bob Martin, technical editor for Practical Photography magazine says, "For walks in the French Alps your existing compact zoom would provide you with mountain pictures of an excellent quality whilst not weighing you down too much while you climb. If you want to take more detailed shots of say wildlife or climbers you would need a telephoto lens, but for generic vista shots and group photographs you need more of a wide angled lens, which your compact would provide just fine. To get more creative with your shots you could try an SLR camera because this gives you more control over the settings and you can try out things like different shutter speeds."

Depends what you want to take pictures of. For big views, you'd be better off with a decent wide angle.

Given the weight issue, I wouldn't be heading for a long lens at all.  If you are familiar with your current lens, stick with it.

Have a wonderful time
