Where’s Patagonia, and what’s the walking like?

Answer

By Anonymous

The landscape in the heart of Patagonia (the astonishing mountain region that straddles Chile and Argentina), changes in amazing and dramatic ways all the way to the beguiling giant monoliths of the Torres del Paine (Torres Towers). These sheer rock walls bite almost 9,000ft into the sky like a giant’s lower jaw. To reach them, follow the Torres Del Paine Circuit, hiking through pastures, spying icefields, scampering through rocky gullies and negotiating ancient beech woods. It’s a mesmerising trail.

Amazing!

Yes truly beautiful. I never made it to the Torres del Paine national park but lots of my friends did and they said it was great.

I did a lot of adventuring around the very tip of Chile in January  (2001) and surprisingly it wasn't as cold as I thought it was going to e. One of he highlights for me was a trip to a Penguin breeding ground and we were lucky enoughto see some artic foxes and thousans of Penguins on the beach. Lots of baby penguins too.

However you would not believe how stinky those guys were.

Unfortunately no pics as back themn I did not have a digital camera.

Patagonia is ..

At the tip of South America. It is the collective term for the lower parts of Chile and Argentina.

Trekking is plenty but the two main areas are Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina and Torres del Paine National Park in Chile.

I wrote a travel and trekking guidebook to Los Glaciares National Park in 2005. More details and pictures can be found at http://www.colinhenderson.co.uk.

There is great trekking through beech forests beneath the mountains and you can get right up to the glacial lakes beneath Mount Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre.

Torres del Paine national park is around 100km away, across the border in Chile. Trekking routes include the W trail (5 days approx.) and the Full circuit. Both show magnificent views of the Paine towers - three tall, pepper-pot peaks with seemingly blank, vertical walls.

E-mail me through here if you want more info. Happy to provide.

Cheers,

Colin
