I want to take a trip to Scotland to see the Northern Lights. Where is the best place to see them with good public transport links?

Trail contributor Ben Winston says, “In terms of ease the Cairngorms should be your first choice, if you’re comfortable in big mountains. Maybe you could walk the Lairig Ghru from north to south, as it is low-level and easy to get to by public transport. Aviemore would be good, or you could go to the Glen Affric Youth Hostel.”
To get within shooting distance of the Cairngorms, take a train to Inverness or Aviemore. Plan your journey by visiting nationalrail.co.uk or phoning 08457 484950.
From Inverness, take the Highland Country Bus number 17 (the Inverness to Tomich service) to the Cannich Hotel, which will take about 45 minutes. For details of timetables, visit www.rapsons.co.uk or call (01463) 710555. A short bus or taxi ride will take you to the River Affric car park, then you can walk to Glen Affric Youth Hostel. From Aviemore you can reach the Cairngorms via the number 34 bus Highland Country Bus, the Grantown to Cairngorm service, to Cairngorm car park.
