What’s the world’s best long distance path?

Answer

By Anonymous

No debate – it’s the 74-mile trek to Everest Base Camp. It’s the lifetime dream, the walker’s pilgrimage, the moment of truth: to step reverently into the towering presence of Earth’s highest peak and say, somewhat breathlessly, ‘wow’. Only a small percentage of the world’s citizens will climb it, but this trail allows us mere mortals to pop up and pay our respects. Yet while the view of the peak may be the over-riding objective as you leave Blighty, many specialists and guides say their clients come back valuing even more the people and cultures they met along the way. From sherpa village to serene monastery, this sacred region and the people who call it home can change your whole outlook on life. And when you’ve finally conquered the Khumbu Glacier and gazed at the highest point on Planet Earth from the Kala Pattar ridge, your newfound love of the locals will help you understand why they call it the ‘Mother of the Universe’.

RE: What’s the world’s best long distance path?

I,ve done the Everest trek in both 'summer' and winter conditions and as no one can deny the litrally breath taking views I personally feel the HRP across the Pyrenees takes some beating. The HRP is 800 km and involves 42,000m of ascent and descent.Plus you get more bang for your buck as you can climb almost all the peaks on the way to the med,but with the Khumbu trek you're fairly limited. The HRP starts on the Atlantic coast and ends seven weeks later on the Med in sunny Banyuls ser Mer.If you've got the time then this trek is an absolute classic.Check out Ton Joostens Cicerone guide book, 'The Pyrenean Haute Route.

Re: What’s the world’s best long distance path?

I heard of the   European Long Distance Walking Route E4 which is very long spreading across all of Europe but have not completed all of it myself, however the parts I have done up in Northern Hungary are very beautiful.

The Hungarain part is known as the Country wide Blue Tour (Országos Kéktúra, or OKT)

It was the first long distance walking route not only in Hungary but in the whole of Europe.

The total length of the blue tour is 1106 km and the total climb is 26.130 metres on the whole route.

It starts on the top of the Irottkő Mountain (884 m), which stands on the Austrian-Hungarian border and then winds its way through the Northern part of the country coming to a stop at the village of Hollóháza at the Hungarian-Slovakian border.

The Blue Tour gives visitors a chance to view the real Hungary and also some beautiful sights, both natural and man made. There are many forts and castles to see,  lookout towers, three World Heritage Sites (the panorama of Budapest from the hills, the old village of Hollókő and the Stalactite Cave of Aggtelek), also Lake Balaton, the Danube Bend and the spent volcanoes of the Tapolca Basin.

Anyone who completes the blue tour can receive the Blue tour badge, which is free of charge to a member of the MTSZ. If you are not a member, (I’m guessing you are not) then you can receive the badge if you pay the production price.  The MTSZ publishes and hands over the badge with a small ceremony. It likes to keep a record of the people, who have completed the Blue Tour. Everybody can obtain the badge, regardless of the nationality.
