I dream of walking the Inca Trail, but is it all it’s cracked up to be?

Watching the sunrise over Machu Picchu is the most sensational end to any long-distance path. Full stop. Period. To see the spectacular ruins, sheltered in a bowl of soaring mountains, is not just a walking goal, but a lifetime goal. And it’s just one of the highlights of the trail, as it heads past Lake Titicaca and by the snow-peaked Andes, passing through bustling Indian villages. Quite simply, the Inca Trail is the complete trail, mixing ancient history, strong local cultures, and jaw-dropping scenery. The only potential downside are the crowds at Macchu Picchu, but trek there and you’ll have the site to yourself in the early morning before the buses arrive.

I did the 2 day inca trail this year.  A lot of travellers book in advance but direct with a Peruvian operator.  You cannot do the inca trail on our own as you need porters and permits.

I guided there myself this year, and my group had good weather with blue sky when we arrived at Machu Picchu.  On the other hand my partner's group had cloudy weather not so good.

A good time to go for weather and less crowds is October.

Do you need to trek there independantly to arrive early in the morning or do trek operators aim to get you there at this time too? Is it a good idea to trek it independantly? Thanks, PH
