I dream of walking the Inca Trail, but is it all it’s cracked up to be?

Watching the sunrise over Machu Picchu is the most sensational end to any long-distance path. Full stop. Period. To see the spectacular ruins, sheltered in a bowl of soaring mountains, is not just a walking goal, but a lifetime goal. And it’s just one of the highlights of the trail, as it heads past Lake Titicaca and by the snow-peaked Andes, passing through bustling Indian villages. Quite simply, the Inca Trail is the complete trail, mixing ancient history, strong local cultures, and jaw-dropping scenery. The only potential downside are the crowds at Macchu Picchu, but trek there and you’ll have the site to yourself in the early morning before the buses arrive.
