Re: What if I freeze with fear on a scramble?
You all seem to missing the point here. The question was "What should I do if I freeze". They are not asking to be lectured on whether they should be in the hills or not! Until a person gets themselves into a situation they will not know how they are going to react. Saying people should not go out into the hills because they do not have the same level of knowledge or experiance as youselves is wrong. The only way they will earn is through expperiancing these situations first hand.
My advice would be to calm down and think rationally. Look at where you are and the reason you have frozen. Think of the solution, not the problem. Conquer your fear, pull on the advice strength of a group. If on your own look at the easiest way out of the situation and take it. Always have an alternative route in mind when you start out.
I've had this feeling myself the first time I stepped out onto Crib Cogh. I froze and didn't know what to do. Even though I have exxperiance of mountain walking, scrambling and rock climbing. I slowed down, took deep breaths looked at where I needed to step, (not over the edge), and took insperation from my friend. Once out there it was uplifting.
Hope this helps, rather than lectures. Go out and enjoy. The hills are not the domain of the elite!
