What scrambling grades are Central and Custs Gulley on Great End, in summer conditions, and how long do they take?

Answer

Trail magazine

By Trail magazine

We asked Graham Thompson, gear editor for Trail magazine, and LFTO's resident Lake District expert:

"In summer, Custs Gully on Great End is grade two and Central Gully is grade three. In both cases though, they are better as winter routes as they're just rough scree gullies in summer.

"They are mentioned in the original version of Scrambles in the Lake District by R. B. Evans, published by Cicerone (and available second-hand at Abe Books) but they do not get any stars for quality. In this guide book Cust’s Gully is suggested as a continuation of Ruddy Gill.

"However, in the newer edition of the guidebook the two routes are omitted and I presume that is because they are not really worth doing outside of winter conditions."

Re: What grade are the gulleys on Great End?

Central is given 3 and comes with a health warning in the Evans guide - 'can only be recommended to the most experienced and competent'

Cust's is given 2.
