I’m off to Snowdonia for some scrambling. Please could you suggest the best route for me?
By Anonymous
You haven’t told us what experience you’ve had of scrambling. If you’re a beginner then go for the Grade 1 scrambles on the north ridge of Tryfan (SH662588) or Llech Ddu Spur on Carnedd Dafydd (SH666637) or Bristly Ridge which is just behind Tryfan (SH662588). When you’re happy with these days out (and although only Grade 1, they are very, exciting and challenging scrambles) then try the Grade 2 scramble on Idwal Slabs and Seniors Ridge over Llyn Idwal (SH647595). Other excellent Grade 2 scrambles include Bryant’s Gully in Llanberis Pass and rising onto Esgair Felan (SH633575).
If you’re ready for a real challenge then you can step up to a Grade 3 scramble on Clogwyn y Person Arête on Snowdon (SH616553). Others include Y Garn east ridge (SH634600) and Carnedd y Filiast via Atlantic Slab (SH623627). All these are on OS Landranger 115 and would make for a great week’s-worth of scrambling.
Classic Mountain Scrambles in England and Wales by Graham Thompson and published by Mainstream covers all the better routes in Snowdonia as well as the Lake District.

Try Scrambles and Easy Climbs in Snowdonia, they have all the classics listed, and 'expeditions' that string routes together. Would recommend Tryfan,as the others, Crib if you like exposure, and Moel Siabod if you are new to scrambling.

Another good scramble on Tryfan is Little Gully on the east side accessed from Heather terrace. Its normally quite and away from the crowds. The Cannon stone on the North face makes for impressive photos if you can get the camers angle right. Nor'Nor groove is the next one I am going to explore, again accessed from Heather Terrace. It all depends on what grade scramble you want? I only do grade 1 or 2 as I don't have a lot of rope experiance. Two books I would recommend are; Scrambles in Snowdonia by Steve Ashton. Classic Mountain Scrambles in England and Wales by Trails very own Graham Thompson. Both are very instructive and detailed. Don't forget Crib Goch as well, although a head for heights is needed here.

I agree with blanch80, The North Ridge of Tryfan and Bristly Ridge are great scrambles.... with Tryfan, in all the times I have gone up the North Ridge I don't think I have gone exactly the same route twice...each time I see something I have not seen before... and to carry on over then up Bristly Ridge is a brilliant day of scrambling in Snowdonia. I can't comment on Llech DDu Spur in Cwm Llafar as I have not tried there.... yet!!!
