Has anybody done the grade 2 scramble at Scafell Pike - if so, what can I expect and what advice can you give?
By GrahamThompson
I’m guessing the scramble you are referring to is the one that climbs over Round How (Grid Ref: NY217081). This is a grade 2 scramble and gets 2 (out of 3) stars for quality in the guidebook Scrambles in the Lake District, by R. B. Evans. This route naturally leads onto Ill Crag – North West Buttress (Grid Ref NY223078) which is also a grade 2 route and is again given 2 stars in the above guide book.I’ve climbed this route several times over the years as a great way to approach Scafell Pike from the Corridor Route, with a start point in either Borrowdale or Wasdale. If you are up to grade 2 scrambling, then it is probably one of the best ways up Scafell Pike. However, it all depends on your experience!! Grade 2 scrambles generally include a steep section of rock that requires hands and may even require the protection of a rope for less experienced scramblers who want to climb the route in relative safety. Being in the mountains is never 100% safe and scrambling is certainly less safe than walking on flat ground. On a grade 2 route there will be longer sections of steep terrain compared to grade 1 routes. Some skill in route finding is also required, as the best and easiest route may not be obvious. In general grade 2 scrambles are not appropriate for descending. The scrambles over Round How and Ill Crag – North West Buttress are pretty exposed but they climb good rock with big holds. They are great scrambles but a rope is definitely advised to climb them in relative safety.Play safe and enjoy!

If you mean the one over round how, etc. where you can link 3 scrambles to get towards the top yes (in GTs book) Havn't got the guides as I'm away and I don't know your experience/ability level. I found them straight forward but someone else might not. As previous post, which routes do you mean?

You might get more response if you can be more precise about the scramble. Name? Where on the mountain? (My guides don't have a scramble there at all!)

What scrambling grades are Central and Custs Gulley on Great End, in summer conditions, and how long do they take?
