Do I need special boots for Grade 3?
By Anonymous
Really good scramblers manage in walking boots, but for us mere mortals boots with a scrambling bent are a distinct advantage. These have narrower toes for making use of narrow clefts, extra-grippy rubber on the sole, flexible ankles and high rubber rands made of proper climbing rubber. All this combines to make so-so holds safer and you feel distinctly Spiderman-esque. Good examples are Scarpa’s Pro Ascent, Raichle’s All Degree Lite GTX and La Sportiva’s Trango Guide boots. All feel dextrous and look great, but they’re hard underfoot for the walk-in and you can expect the soles to wear fairly quickly.

What scrambling grades are Central and Custs Gulley on Great End, in summer conditions, and how long do they take?
