I take several vitamin supplements but have read conflicting advice about when the best time of day is to take them: some say morning with breakfast, others say before bed. Do you know who is right?

Nutritionist Allan Johnson says, “It’s best to take them in the morning with your breakfast. Not only is this easier for you to remember, but it is kinder on your stomach as your metabolism is up and raring to go in the morning, and it carries it thought and absorbs it better.”

Re: When's the best time of day to take vitamins?

The best time to take vitamins is by eating a balanced diet full of fruit and veg.  Get your vitamins the natural way.  Then you don't need to worry about when and how often to take suppliments.  Also did you know that too much of certain vitamins and minerals can have a depremental affect on the body?  If your already eating fruit and veg cut out the suppliments.  If you have them on advice from your GP, ask them when its the best time of the day to take them.

You could also argue that the best time to take supplements is after your evening meal, as mineral transport and repair processes in the body are greatest at night. The evening is not good for high doses of B vitamins as they assist in the release of energy, so may keep you awake. If you are taking more than one a day of a vitamin, it is best to take them in a divided dose. This will help to maximise absorption and maintain them at a steady blood level. Aside from the timing issue, most vitamins and minerals should be taken with food. Although there are a few exceptions to this. Fat soluble vitamins are best taken at the same time as foods containing fat (Vit A, D, E, fish oil, CoQ10) So don't take them first thing in the morning, before you have eaten. Avoid taking supplements with tea and coffee as these can interfere with absorption. But finally, don't worry if you miss one dose, just carry on as normal. Don't take twice as many next time. That's probably more information than you need! But I hope it helps.

Re: When's the best time of day to take vitamins?

hi Pam,

about the Vits, this is a connundrum just like the best time of day to train? some people say morning is best as your metabolism is high after breakfast and your energy stores are ready to be burnt from the previous day. yet some say the best time is mid/late afternoon to give the body enough time to warm up through the day, and mobilise the joints well. I take Vits myself and go for the cod liver oil every night before sleep, and my Vits in the morning as my body 'fires' over after breccy, this is when your metabolism would appretiate it a little more I feel, but its down to you and how many you take.(not to negate)

I would think that with food would be best, because your digestive system is active at that point.
